Ok if you are an ADVANCE user, aka you know a good amount about computers and you feel comfortable in the registry these tweaks will make your computer run so smooth. I have not explained how to get into the registry for a reason because if you don't know how to get there then you should do any of this.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
- Change AutoEndTasks to the value 1
- Change MenuShowDelay to the value of 0
- Change WaitToKillAppTimeout to the value of 4000
- Check HungAppTimeout and make sure the value is 5000

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
- Change DisablePagingExecutive to the value of 1 (must have 256mb of RAM)
- Change LargeSystemCache to the value of 1 (must have 256mb of RAM, over 1GB might become unstable)
- Change SecondLevelDataCache to the value of youe L2 Chache (kilobytes) in decimal mode.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
- Change EnablePrefetcher to the value of 5

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control
- Change WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 4000

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
- Create a new key called AlwaysUnloadDLL and set the "default" key/value to 1

- Use WinRAR and set it to be the default program for .ZIP files then goto "Start Menu => Run" and type "regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll" then press enter

- Goto "Hardware Device Manager", expand "System devices" then double click "System CMOS/real time clock" then click "Resources" tab then check the IRQ value. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl add a new DWORD called IRQ#Priority (# os the IRQ of the CMOS and if it is something like 08 use 8 [i.e. IRQ8Priority]) then set the value to 1.

- Goto "Hardware Device Manager", expand "IDE ... Controllers" then double click "Primary IDE Channel" click "Advance Settings" tab and make sure both devices have the "Transfer Mode" set to "DMA if available" then repate this with the "Secondary IDE Channel"

"Did you care to read the site i posted?
For every bogus tweak there's a link with a trusted and competent source (arstechnica, microsoft etc) explaining why the tweak is false. In fact some tweaks don't even exist anymore or they never existed, this has been proved (example, the l2 tweak: http://arstechnica.com/tweak/nt/L2-cache-1.html)."

Dude he has one source on stuff and comming from Mircosoft, lol beliveing MS is the dumbest thing to do. As for the L2 Cache, sometimes Windows does not call it so some people do get a performance enhancement some do not. But then again why would it be there if it did nothing?

"-DisablePagingExecutive: disables the ability to page unused kernel memory, ram better used for application"

No if you knew anything you are not diableing pageing, only pageing when your memory is not full. Otherwise I would not do this because I wouldn't beable to run BF2.

"-LargeSystemCache: increases the amount of fixed disk cache used, you need it only on fileserver, otherwise it decreases the free memory for application"

Umm actually it puts the XP Kernel into memory, it dosn't fix the disk chache. But as it says you need alot of memory otherwise it will degrade performance.

"-AlwaysUnloadDLL: windows doesn't always immediately unload dll not currently used, but will do if memory is needed. Btw some apps expect to find these dll and crash when they are not found."

Never had a problem with this, and I have been useing these tweaks for 4 years.

For every bogus tweak there's a link with a trusted and competent source (arstechnica, microsoft etc) explaining why the tweak is false. In fact some tweaks don't even exist anymore or they never existed, this has been proved (example, the l2 tweak: http://arstechnica.com/tweak/nt/L2-cache-1.html).

Others are simply not useful or dangerous:

-DisablePagingExecutive: disables the ability to page unused kernel memory, ram better used for application
-LargeSystemCache: increases the amount of fixed disk cache used, you need it only on fileserver, otherwise it decreases the free memory for application
-AlwaysUnloadDLL: windows doesn't always immediately unload dll not currently used, but will do if memory is needed. Btw some apps expect to find these dll and crash when they are not found.

In general it's always better not to mess with windows dynamic memory management, it's easy to have new problems (like losing standby and hybernate support) instead of increasing performance.

Just a word of caution, guys. Whenever you make changes to your registry and you are not 100% sure of what you are doing, please back it up first. If you are truly paranoid you could create a restore point as well. Of course some tweakers will have disabled system restore so that option is out.

I am just concerned that some neophyte will do this and miss one item, make a typo, or whatever and find his system unuseable as a result.

Looking at your changes, I doubt any of them, improperly applied, would be catistrophic (sic) but it just is good practice to be able to return to square one.

one question on this tho smedd...

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
- Change DisablePagingExecutive to the value of 1 (must have 256mb of RAM)
- Change LargeSystemCache to the value of 1 (must have 256mb of RAM, over 1GB might become unstable)
- Change SecondLevelDataCache to the value of youe L2 Chache (kilobytes) in decimal mode."

when you say must have 256mb or RAM is that an exact amount you need, or a minimum, because some values i noticed are a little different on my registry... (but then again HP is gay...)

zyw80, actually I do know what I'm doing. I just don't feel like explaining more, I'm just shareing what I do when I reformat my computer as I just did it. And none of this has messed up my computer nor is it outdated as I have XP Pro SP2 and it all works fine. You should learn what you are talking about.

I'd belive Tweaktown.com before a home made site from someone useing COMCAST!

But all of it I use and notice a diff, also a few other clan mates have tryed it and they noticed a diff too.

But then again all of these sites includeing tweaktown (one of the most respected tweak site) think different about the prefetcher (just one thing of this home made site says)
