The Nagato grew on me as time wore on. I broke up the grind to Yammy with the Boomstick Fuso and Nagato. The farther I got from 77, the more I used the Nagato, until near exclusivity at 84-89.
The Nagato is quite forgiving on underlevelled, unboosted, or generally not quite up to snuff Engys. The 42-knot speed is pretty quick by GB standards and pretty easy to obtain.
Nagato is frequently underestimated in a GB environment when compared to the distinctive shapes (which basically scream shoot me first) of the BB4s-BB5s. The range is very, very solid for a BB3.
The worst part of the Nagato is the shell broadside, which is comparatively weak at 8 shells. However, the reload is quite nice, and I found by the end that I didn't notice the weak broadsides very much, as I adjusted to the guns and their much improved spread.
Nagato can also take quite a solid hit. Considering the Yammy has 1 more slot, and yet needs to use 2 for AA gunners, my Nagato at least had superior soft defense and repair capabilities (which seems to be lacking on IJN crews). It also has a quite a chunk of raw HP.
All these advantages lead to these related tips for improving your Nagato gameplay:
- Make sure you have a bind of AP and know when to use it. Lots of AWs around these days - Use your range against BB3s and below - Use your speed to deny battle in unfavourable circumstances (blind, outgunned) - Use your range and speed to attack distracted, larger opponents - Use your speed to dodge, zigzag, and weave in and out of enemy range - Your 43 degree guns give you pretty impressive range against pursuers, use it
