Your pilot load out will reflect your preferences in play style. If you are going for the
fastest leveling, remember that you can only fit 8 crew besides the BO on the CV1/CV2, and
that the highest level CVs accommodate at most 8 pilots. If you are leveling more than 8
pilots, or also leveling support sailors, you will need to rotate crew through.
I chose to level 4 fighter pilots, 2 TB pilots, and 2 DB pilots. In games with my CV1/CV2,
I load the extra TB and DB pilot into the gun slots.
Three fighters I would consider the minimum to rotate through waves of [non-local]
fighters. A 4th fighter will help you get more fighters into the air in an emergency,
while keeping the waves small for loading and organization purposes. I personally would
find a 5th fighter pilot useless in my CV2. Perhaps a Europa or De Grass could make use of
one better? Normally I split my ready space in half, and give it to two fighters, always
keeping planes ready using the other two. If things get stressful or opportunity arises, I
just launch everything I can and let them run out of fuel rather than return.
You will naturally discover whether you like DBs or TBs more. If you never use either the
DB or TB, you can always sell or trade that extra pilot (might be a little harder with the
TB?). But I personally strongly recommend using both a TB and DB pilot. TBs are useful to
defend yourself against a suspected submarine (just don't expect to be able to ready them
on a moment's notice; if he surfaces next to you, it's too late already). DBs are for
finishing off capital ships. Either plane can kill the low level boats (with good
aiming!!). I recommend at minimum one each of DB and TB. Why take more than one bomber
pilot? You will want to be able to ready bombers while your others are returning.
Additionally, if you intend to use waves of 7 or 8 bombers, you definitely need a second
bomber pilot. I personally pair 4 fighter planes with 4 bomber planes in my Graf Zeppelin,
and alternate the DB/TB bombing waves if I'm not busy fighter spamming.
I recommend 4 fighters, 1 DB, 1 TB, and a third bomber of your choice. Get a 4th bomber or
level a support sailor too.
