I just got these, used them for a few days, and have come to the conclusion that they are completely and utterly useless as AA guns.
Why?
Check out the explosion height when using the AA shells at angle 30.
Compare it to the explosion height of other proper AA guns at their GA.
You will note that the 3.9" is significantly lower.
What does this mean? It means that, metaphorically, the 3.9" "can't get it up". Its max angle is insufficient to reach the GA. Angle 30 only allows you to hit planes at a very, very narrow range where the shell is at the very height of its apogee. At any other time during the shell's travel, it will not reach the altitude of regular flying height.
Of course, it works fine for lower-flying aircraft, but that's besides the point.
