As said in the above post, go through the forums and read some, you will get a good idea of good and bad things. Here are a few
Pick your fights, dont go and battle someone that can out armor/gun/durability/range you.... If you are still in a FF, dont go up against a CL or high lvl DD, stick with comparable ships during a fight.
Stay in noobland till lvl 12+, it is the area right outside Busan. If you go and play in area 7 you will be playing with higher lvl guys that will do you in faster then what your guns could reload.
Dont worry about armor, anything less then 2.0 inches on belt/deck is nothing, anything less then 16 bulge is nothing and bulk just doesnt help that much. So until you can have enough room to have the minimal amount as above it just wastes money and weight...
Deck is for CLs/CAs/BBs for that it protects against high angled shots. Belt is what you should use for it helps protect against low angled shots Bulge helps protect against torpedos and you should have some in a DD/CL Bulkhead helps protect your sailors so that you dont lose as many and protects you engine so that you can take more damage without having to lose speed, but Bulk is the least effective of all armor types.
Watch out for TWs (Torp Whores), any ship that uses torps as the primary weapon and in some cases only weapon.... They will lay down a wall of torps for you with welcomed arms... When you start playing AW games (All Welcome) watch out for this tactic.... And if cought in a wall of torps there are alot of ways to dodge them, there is even a post that has pictures showing how to dodge em. Just use the search in the top right and put in *torps*.... You tiny boat with great speed and ability to turn quickly makes you a hard target for torps, if you use you turning force correctly with your speed you will be able to dodge torps 90 percent of the time when cought dead center of a torp wall.
Dont worry about national sailors till they are lvl 12, you wont be able to get them if your sailors are lvl 11 or less... When you do get to lvl 12 be careful of what nation you want for once you pick a nation there is no turning back for that sailor... If you go U.S. then you are stuck with U.S. with that sailor... Each nation has its pros and cons...
When recruiting sailors for a crew try to get a B.O. (Bridge operater) with a potenial rating of 13+ - 15+ anything less then +13 isnt good for a B.O. and a +15 POT is the best for that stat... Have two gunners with +11/+10, +10/+11 at least or +12/+10, +10/+12... The first number is the accuracy of the sailor and the second number is the reload.... To see what exactly what these numbers mean in detail, go to www.trainworld.us this is a good site to see stats of sailors/guns/ships/planes anything that has to do with the game...Remember this site for you will be asking questions that are answered here....
Those are pretty much the basics for new players, A.K.A. noobs....
