my 2 cents: you should have an even number of gunners, not 3. 2 is fine for basic shooting, but 2 more on AA will be beneficial later on. All the later ships require 2 for secondary guns.
Also playing asw in a somners in GB can get a noob from 18 to lvl 38 really quickly if you want to avoid the ddx/atlanta grind. Also if you get tired of shooting all day, playing a few games ASW is a nice relaxing break, even.
Without main guns, 3 depth charge launchers, an ss fcs1, minimal recruits on the BO and non essential crew, and 0.2 belt, you can go 66 OH and very easily. Since 2 second reload on dc is fast anyway, you might as well take off most the recruits on the torpmen.
As for sonar escort an FF1 will do nicely, but an FF2-M3 (lvl 4) can cruise at 50 at the cost of 12 credits a game. Again minimal crew makes for faster speeds.
Thats the setup, as for technique, read the asw guide. It literally took me less than a week to get to the big ship tree fork and going back helps me deal with my blitz rage sometimes. Also i didnt waste credits on ddx and atlanta.
