Some people have troubles starting up the testserver client. So i decided to create this
troubleshooting topic, which will be updated regularly if we come accross more issues/fixes.

------Crashing after start
I heard a possible fix to this is enabling DEP (Data Execution Prevention) when using
Windows XP

------Hackshield relating issues
-Do not run 3rd party programs like NF fixer (or something similar)
-Do not use custom sprites in the testserver client
-Try running the Navyfield.exe with administrator privileges (was not needed for me though)

Tip by Skssoldier:
To get past the crash and to the loading screen:
Find where you extracted the navyFIELD client for the Test server. Right click, go to
properties. Disable Visual Themes and Desktop Composition

Then:
Control Panel>
System and Security>
System>
Advanced system settings>
Data Execution Prevention>
Add NavyFIELD(Test Server client) and HSUpdater (This is in HShield [of the folders you
extracted with the client])

If you do this correctly, you should not crash (worked for me and Reddofnoynac)
Don't forget to run as an Administrator

Error 204 is a windows runtime error. It basicly says the software is tripping up.

Make sure you have the latest downloads from this site. Delete the dev client folder and
extract/install from the ZIP file again. Then extract the manual patch overtop of it.
Should solve the problem.

"I have tried all of these and still crash every time I try to load the game. I have
redownloaded several times, I have tried manual and auto patching, tried it in
compatability, as an admin, no compatability, im on W7 64 bit. Every time I try to run
I get the hackshield pro thing come up, then it goes to the game loading screen,
says processing update for a few seconds then crashes and closes."

What is the error message? (Does it produce one at all?)

I just edited getting past the crash. What's posted here is missing a small step, which
may confuse some people (after advanced system settings, click on settings under
performance. Then continue on to the Data Exec. Prevention).

There's no need for apologies.

I would be the last person to ban custom sprites from NF. There are some very good ones
around. I have used them a lot myself on the main servers (not currently due to a forced
reinstall :S )

However, on th testserver things are a bit different. Hackshield is introduced here as a
test (that's what a testserver is for). And while I agree it is unlikely that sprites are
a problem, you can never be sure. So if you're experiencing issues it is best to use a
clean client without custom sprites and without programs like NF fixer. It could just be that
hackshield is set a bit to strict right now. I have been experimenting with it a bit
longer now and initially it wouldn't even let me alt-tab out of the client properly.
Luckily that has been fixed for me and currently I have no issues with the test client.

So in short:

When you have issues, use a clean client. If you still crash, start turning off other
programs (if you can). Maybe that way at least a part of the problem can be identified.

The GM's have asked me to keep a list with issues that arise with the testclient, so if
you have issues, keep posting them in here please.

Assuming that HS works in the same way as a basic anti-hack system (ie. checks file size versus
file name), I had no problems using a custom made FFY sprite. The original one had 58kb and mine
had roughly 58kb. As a result, I had no problem using the sprite in-game:

However, you are still right in a sense that it might crash. That is something I feel must be
addressed, because after several experimentation, I eventually had to reinstall the client.

Although most custom sprites rarely exceed 2kb more than the original (assuming that this range
is accepted by HS), I do stand by your statement within troubeshooting tips. It is better to play it
safe than mess up and repatch he whole thing.

I do believe I have to publicly make an apology for my inappropriate tone. It struck me while
posting this that it takes lots of guts to take on such a big project of salvaging what is the remains
of NF from the mess it is in, and the last thin you need is a person on the forums shouting at you,
not realizing how much effort and time it takes off you for doing something voluntarily.

Well, you are wrong, this is the testserver we're talking about, not the main servers.
That's why I put it under hackshield issues, not crashing. Read properly please.

The testserver uses the hackshield program, which is totally different from the main
servers. Therefore these crashes can (and I say can) happen due to altered sprite files
and program files
like NF fixer.

So please, read first that this is about testserver first where altered sprite files CAN
(not necessarily will) cause a crash or program abort.

All I am trying to say is that for some people (from which I know they use a totally clean
install and no 3rd party programs) it works without problems. I am just trying to help
people get it started, and eliminate all possible causes for errors, since I dont really
know myself how strict the hackshield program works.

I'm sorry mail, custom sprites do not effect gameplay or the rate of crashing. Crashing only ever
happens because of the badly coded game.

You guys at TNF really need to put this inside your brains and stop acknowledging rumours
mentioned by the damn Europeans -.-
