First of ally. Untill you at least hit CV4 Do NOT USE GUNS. Use the slots to train more
pilots.
As for CV guns... i find myself using 3.9" A the most. It has good damage against air good
reload and can use HE ammo.
The 5" looks nice but has lower damage against air and reloads way slower.
I was fooling around with 7.9" singles for a little but most IJN CVs dont have enough
slots to make it effective.
I would use 6.1" triples for the forward guns on Akagi nad Kaga most likely the D version
since when something larger than a CL comes anywhere close to you you are toast... guns or
not (there are exeptions but they are rare) but the extra reload helps in killing lesser
ships.
In short:
Generic CV - 3.9" A guns
Kaga/Akagi - 2x 6.1" + Hedge Hogs (be sure to take a FF escort... come on they are dirt
cheap and let you see subs).
