Destroyers were named after naval commanders. Cruisers were named after cities. Battleships were named after states (except the first 4 before the standard was adopted). Carriers were not standardized except within their class, which further illustrates their pariah status even up to 1939.
Since WW2 the naming conventions have changed.
Ballistic Missile submarines are now named after states, attack submarines after cities, aircraft carriers after presidents, cruisers after battlefields, and frigates/destroyers after naval commanders.
