Be careful not to hit teammates, a lot of times new players are not watching their ship position and hit others, which
lowers exp significantly.

Another might be use Manual and don't use torps.

If you hit ships that are of a higher tier than you, you get more experience.
Example: CL hitting a BB5

Also, the more attack you get, the better the exp (asuming you hit mostly ships from a
higher tier).

Finally, staying alive longer is also a cause for more exp.

There is no magic for fast experience... just be patient and play. Learn tactics from
better players and you will start doing better.
