I found that the UK DDs were great for speed in maneuvering around. it helps to keep you alive early on, short of running into some turd doing a cheap torp spread tactic right in close where you can't possibly hope to get out of the way (and that's assuming it's an enemy and not one of your own team mates).
the Dido is ok, although you really get some good punch with the Sirius. avoid the ECL, it's got 7 R guns = good. but their aiming goes all screwy on you, which is bad if you've got 5 guns on target, and 2 off shooting behind you at you own team (you lose exp for shooting your own ships).
beyond that, if you go Sub, CV, or whichever BB route, read through the guides and see what the pros & cons are for each.
you'll also find a guide in the UK section of the forums for the DDs-CAs and others.
ammendment:
don't get into a routine of doing the same thing over and over and over again. predictability, gets you killed. don't always go north, don't always go south, don't always just charge out with torps. the more you play, the more some people get a handle on what you like to do and if they know you're going to be there and you're someone who can do some damage, they'll be looking for you.
