  • Junkyard liquid cooling for PC?

I'm considering using a liquid cooling unit on my PC again. This time I'm not going to use
store bought overpriced products. I'd like some opinion and ideas.

Here's what I've brainstormed so far.

-1/2 inch copper line

-An old aluminum AC condenser from a Mazda (about 12x20 in, single row core) OR a copper
heater core from a S-10 blazer (6x12 inches double core). Any opinion on which would be best?

-Pure Red Line "Water Wetter" for coolant

-A 12v PC water pump (already owned from previous system) OR I may use a 12v in-line fuel
pump for converting old pushrod pump engines to electric fuel pumps. Overkill? A lot more
water will be in the system than normal PC liquid cooling units.

-A home made copper CPU water block. Similar to this one.

Any other ideas?

@Trophy

Liquid cooling systems are much more efficient and quieter. My PC now resides in a very
poorly ventilated entertainment center. A cold processor is a happy processor. I used to
have a store bought liquid cooling system in my old Pentium 4 system that I really liked.
The only reason I got rid of it is because the pump was getting weak and the water blocks
wouldn't fit my new system.

Don't go for cheap liquid cooling, your asking for trouble,(speaking from experience)
If your not planning to overclock your pc to the max then your wasting your money, unless
of course you have money to waste, in which case buy a decent cooling system.

I'll probably start with just the CPU for now. My ram already has water jackets on them
and the video card seems to be breathing really well.

The reservoir will probably be mounted under the optical drive giving it over 3 drive bays
space. The radiator is probably going to be part of the side of the case externally.
The case is a mid atx but the room for fans is pretty good. Although a lot of fans isn't
really my goal. I want the efficiency of the liquid cooling rather than packing it on for
overclocking.

I'm going to flare the ends of the copper pipe and use heater core hose to mate them with
the barbed fittings. The lower bays will be occupied by multiple hard drives.

As for the parts, well... I have some stuff left over from my auto projects. I live in the
US. I also work part time for an auto parts store so I have resources and discounts :D

I'm still a little uncertain of using a fuel pump. I've heard that if the coolant is
circulating too fast it can actually be less efficient as it doesn't spend enough time in
the radiator.

Yeah, I also realized that mixing aluminum with copper is a big no-no. None of it should
be touching any steel/aluminum non-painted surfaces so it should be alright.

I assume its flexible copper line? Make sure it isnt touching any other metal surface or
it will corrode.

Well if you are going to be building water blocks for the chipset and gpu, i'd suggest
the old fuel pump instead of a little pump from a shop bought kit.

Are the pump, radiator and resevoir going to be mounted inside the case or outside?
Are you only going to cool the CPU, or maybe add chipset or GPU?
What model case is it? (sizes, bays, etc)
How many case fans are there? and how many spaces for fans are available inside
the case?
Do you use any of the lower drive bays at the front?

Copper pipes are great for this sort of thing. But you'll need to use some plastic
hoses/connectors/corners if its all going to be kept inside the case.

Also, where are you? I can sugest plenty of parts and where to get them if you are
in the UK :P
