I used double 5/38's on my Somers with a single torp mount. It was near max
weight with full crew and on slot used to train up new crew. I even went to light
engine due to weight but it was a fine ship until I could use the DDX (my BO was in
Atlanta when DDX came out so I had 34+ gunners by the time he could drive the
DDX.)

Config. really depends on if you want full crew and max sailors on the ship. :-)

5"/38Ds no armor and yes put torps on it but if u do launche em press F4 till gradual
fireing comes up. trusst me i torp whored with the somers from 28-30 and 37-38.

5" guns are better for all around, as you can put AA shells on as well. Trouble is,
they're heavy, and ammo will be somewhat limited. You might wanna leave some armor, as
you'll be up close a lot, but you'll want no more than 2 torp mounts if you go with the 5"s

I am looking for the all around versitile kinda thing, kinda like what DD did in WWII.
So the armour is not a good idea then? What about packing on some 5" guns? Are
these too heavy for the Sommers.

What are you trying to accomplish with your Somers?

I'd say ditch the 3rd torpedo mount, and maybe the armor as well. Speed does you well in a
somers, you cant really torp whore it, but two mounts is plenty for general torpification,
and the 4" guns are alright for combat, or at least distraction while you torp.

There's a bunch of ways you can outfit a somers, but it all depends on what you want to do
with it.
