Hi.
What is better? Portland, or New Orleans and why?

I checked the numbers using the Atlanta, and the ship calculator is dead accurate for
armor (deck, belt, bulge, and bulkhead).

Also, there *are* two CA FCS (I and II), however I was wrong and both the Portland and New
Orleans will fit the CA FCS II.

FCS is the same....numbers don't mean jack when it comes to engine or FCS, you
have to actually look up what fits

last time i checked, tarrif's armor calculator didn't work (or didn't do it correctly)...but
everything else is fine

mk14N is better than mk13L once your gunners can handle the spread.

i think Portland actually has better deck per unit because of the higher number
(which i believe actually means something beyond cost/weight), but the difference is
minimal and is nullified when you see that New Orleans has 500 more tons to work
with.

Jordan pointed out the difference between the two earlier in this thread, and if you
understand what he's getting at you'll realize that the New Orleans is substantially better.

Try out the ship builder at http://www.tarrif.net/cgi/production/nf_shipbuilder.php and
look at how much more armor you can put on the New Orleans.

For example, 5" of deck armor weighs 4611 tons on the New Orleans; on the Portland, 5"
weighs 5112 tons. The advantage is tipped back to the Portland for belt armor (although
not as significantly), but the New Orleans wins is back again in bulge and bulkhead weight.

Finally, the New Orleans can fit a more accurate FCS (+73 vs +70), has more usable
displacement, and has more DP.

Please.... go with the Portland. The difference in stats is minor, and the Portland
looks much cooler.

If you're going to die, look good doing it! =)

And if you can handle having pretty much no overheat, get the DD3 engine. You will save
another 500 odd tonnes to add to armour. That means that without belt, you are probably
going to have in excess of 5.5" deck on it (I think i could fit 5.7" with a full lvl53
crew, but i'm not 100% sure)

"New Orleans has slightly more usable displacement (505 tons)."

505 tons is not 'slightly'....

Portland is just smaller. and comes earlier.

and it's not as ugly as New Orleans, either.

use mk14 N once your gunners can handle the spread.

New Orleans

It has the same gun space as the portland

It has more DP

It has far more room for armor...

Put it this way...

With,
Three triple 8 inch mk 13s L and four binds of HE light ammo

CA 1 heavy engine

an FCS

5 scouts

lvl 53 BO (all my crews are maxed out)

two lvl 55 gunners

two restorers, lvl 36 & 42 right now...

three repairers, lvl 36, 42 & 46

And a lvl 34 pilot

I can still put on 4.8 inches of deck armor, or go all belt and put on 10.5 inches or
mix it up any way I want... When I play in All welcomes I have 2.0 deck 5.0 belt and
15 bulge... You surely cant do that with a Portland.

Now the armor is why I waited for the N.O., however you better have a crap load of
cash.... When I have my all deck armor configuration I have well over 800K credits
put in the armor alone... I dont have enough to max out on all belt...
