  • L Class Woes...

Tyrsig
Hey all
I just reached level 30 earlier on today, and decided that it was about time that I
said a temporary goodbye to my trusty and faithful Q. I've had the ship for a wonderful
14 levels, and now...well, I want to move on a bit. Anyway, I bought myself a new L Class
Destroyer, outfitted it with the second set of 5.25" duals, and got ready to suit myself up.

But wait, a few problems..

After fitting on these new, much MUCH heavier guns, I actually can fit on LESS crew than
on my Q - I was only able to fit my BO, two Gunners, ONE Repairer, and ONE Restorer...and
even that with only 4 in bulkhead, ZERO in belt! Surely there must be something wrong
there. On my faithful Q, I could fit the BO, Gunners, both a Repairer, Restorer, Second
Seaman (Level 23), and a prospective Engineer (level 17 Support at the moment) along with
decent armor (~0.5 Belt, 5 Bulkhead).

What should I do about this? I don't want to nerf my crew at all...I want to still be
able to level up my support by switching them in and out. Any words of advice out there
for a very disappointed RN Sailor?

I had thought about switching out the 5.25" Doubles for the 7.5" Singles...would that be
wise? I prefer to play the range game, so I don't mind the fewer shells overly
much...would that be effective at all? How do the 7.5" guns compare to my usual 6"/45's
in terms of accuracy?

Any help would be VERY much appreciated - if necessary, I have no problem grinding out to
34 in the Q, but I'd like to get out of the level 16 ship eventually!

You can't use the L, at least IMHO, as your primary ship. It simply does not have enough
free displacement to mount the 5.25 or 6 inch guns and a proper crew. When I briefly used
it I only had my 2nd lower lvl BO plus 2 high 30 lvl gunners onboard, and that was it. But
I was able to keep a reasonable number of recruits on each sailor. Oddly enough, with
higher skilled gunners, my soft defense was higher than my Q with a reasonably full crew,
with a full complement of support sailors.

I'd suggest, if you can afford it, to ditch the L and move up to the big leagues and buy a
Dido. You'll be able to fatten up your crews nicely and once you get the hang of it, you
will earn XP and creds a lot faster than in a DD.

Actually, the 5.25s are heavier than the dual 6s. Approx an extra 30 tons per turret
depending on the variant you select. Picked up an L the other day for quick games,
and was disapointed in its useable displacement, but thats the fault of my fat
gunners I guess.

5.25s are the best for L, unless your crew is light enough to fit double 6"ers.

Just wait til you get the sirius, THAT's when the ownage begins.
