L class, I didn't know it was inferior when I got it. I thought I was uber, so I went out and took on big ships.
You are British, you don't need to be subtle. Put three 7.5" guns, use heavy ammo, and mess some stuff up
You can even take on CLs and CAs! They run parallell to you, and they think you are stupid for lining up parallell to them.
'Pfft, a destroyer, what does he think he's doing?'
Then, at max range, they try to hit you. Their shells land all around you, and maybe on you, but do little damage (because of all your armour!).
And then you shoot at them. Bang, 3x75." fly out, hit them for 400 damage. They wonder WTF was that? They wait for their reload, and fire, and miss you again. BAM you hit them again (they are big, it's easy to hit).
They say 'duck this' and turn towards you to get real close so they can't miss.
You turn away, and run away from them. And you fire again. They thought you could only fire with the rear guns when you run away, but they were wrong. You are firing almost straight backwards with all 3 guns!
'wtf??'
Then they get tired of chasing you, so you use your speed to get back into max range on them, and shoot some more.
Then they run away, and you chase, And while you chase you can fire almost straight forward with all 3 guns!
Don't use the L class like a DD, use it like a CL! With 7.5" guns you have lots of room for armour. And armour works best when you are far away. And you can stay far away because you are faster than any CL.
I'd say get hvyDD engine, put equal #" armour on belt and deck, 4 on bulkhead, and only 1 or 2 on bulge. You should never get hit by torpedos, you should never get into torpedo range. You don't need anything in your T slot, save the weight. Also, get 7.5"L guns when you get the chance, and use both light and heavy ammo. When stuff charges, use heavy, and when you are far away (where you should stay) use light.
You will miss a lot, you might wish you have double 6" guns, but don't be fooled. The damage from a 6" hit is pretty small, and armour and soft defence makes it smaller. To get good hits you will have to be close so all guns hit. With 7.5" guns you get 1 hit out of 6 shots fired, and you are happy! It's a BIG hit, and you get more EXP for long-range hits, and you get more EXP for large-calibre guns.
