I imagine that most people know that a 5" naval gun has a barrel with a 5" diameter. However, how many of you know what the second number means, as in 5" 54 caliber or 3" 70 caliber.

Well, the simple answer is that the caliber in a naval gun is the length of the gun as a multiple of the barrel diameter. So a 5" 54 caliber gun is 54x5" long, or 270" (22.5 feet). I hope some of you find this informational.

I had that posted in the old forum before :(

Anyway, some guns (or at least most German guns) look like

x" SK/y C/z

eg.

11" SK/54.5 C/34

11" = diameter
SK = SchnellfeuerKanone (Rapid Fire Gun)
/54.5 = as above, diameter times this = barrel length
C/34 = Constructed in 1934

Just as addition :)

Take a pound of lead and divide it into 12 equally-sized spheres. The size of one of those spheres is the size of a 12 gauge shotgun barrel. :)

(ditto for 20 gauge, 40, etc.)

Now you have something to stump your friends with.

I seem to recall something about smaller gauge being a larger shotgun. But I could be wrong. Shotguns are not my specialty. I'm more of a pistol/rifle/naval gun type of guy.

Good trivia, here's another one to test ya:

How do they calculate the gauge of a shotgun? I.e. with a 12 gauge shotgun what does the "12" stand for?

(I already know, but the answer is interesting nonetheless)
