As all my "formula-posts" have been recently bumped, I was approached to put
them all into one post so it could be stikied... here it is.

These guides contain advanced information. If you are just starting to play the
game please go ahead and read Obst's guides on www.nf-guides.com. That
webpage gives you all the information you need to start with. If you have done that
and
are still curious about some details, go read ahead.

Since it has quite some information, I divided it into several parts, that are posted as
replies by myself.

0) Ability - how they are calculated / base stats
1) BO's Potential - guideline length / marking distance
2) Accuracy - where's the cap, how is it calculated
3) Reload - where's the cap
4) Torpedo - reload cap
5) AAW - chance of shooting down planes at horizontal and vertical distances with
auto fire
6) Repair - Repairrate and Burnrate
7) Restore - SD

. D - natural overheat speed
. E - overheat speed with crew

Also if you think that you have found a mistake, please contact me directly as it most
probably will just be a misunderstanding and I don't want an obsolete discussion in
this post as it just blows it up and might scare ppl away.
I have not included all "proof" in this post - if you are looking for some numbers how
I came up with the formulas, feel free to look for my old posts from between 2005
and now,
and you will find more information in there.

It took until today for me to really understand this from the guide:

"Pilot number (displayed fighter ability / displayed bomber ability) < , > or = second pilot

A) FP1 (2000/2000) = FP2 (2000/2000) obvious, isn't it?
B) FP3 (2000/ 0) < FP4 (2000/1000) still...
C) FP3 (2000/ 0) = FP5 ( 0/2000) what one plane lacks in attack, the other lacks in
defence. None will be shot down.
D) FP4(3000/1000) < FP6(1000/3000) ha! Indeed the difference in resistance is more
pronounced then the attack difference - due to the cap and non-linearity of the first part
of the
equation.

Taking all this into account - you want true bomber ability on all your pilots - as much
as possible!!"

In these four cases (I added the A) B) C) and D)
Most often Fighters are fighting, Fighters.

Now let's look at your worries Fighter's Shooting Down Bombers and Project:

A) FP1 (2000/2000) = BP1 (2000/2000) Is it EQUAL? Seems so.
Does the Bomber win due the the cap and non-linearity of the first part of the equation?
If the FP1 is (2200/2000) ?

B) FP3 (2000/ 0) < BP2 (2000/1000) Fighter Still is LESS THAN.

C) FP3 (2000/ 0) = BP3 ( 0/2000) What one plane lacks in attack, the other lacks in
defence. None will be shot down. Is it EQUAL? Seems so.

D) FP4(3000/1000) < BP6(1000/3000) Does the Bomber Survive? Because the difference in
resistance is more pronounced then the attack difference - due to the cap and
non-linearity of the first part of the equation.

I hope Adalbert will please come back to show us the Formula. There is an Fighter Attack
Formula and a different Bomber Defense Formula but I do not know what they are.

There will be Curves, but the key here is LEVEL 120.
I am going with my first post today.

That's exactly how I understood it. I just have one slight concern: what if NOT
classing your basic fighter pilot will fail him to shoot a bomber fast enough later
in the game?

There is also some mysterious terms in the guide like penalty from ability overflow. I
am also confused how is it legally possible to look into the source code, I thought
even in ONF they can't look into the whole code...

It's too sad that Adalbert apparently stoped posting here... So many new
ananswered questions...

  • Best Base Stats for Scouts Fighters Bombers

I have been trying to get my mind around what are the best Bases for Pilots
using Adalbert's guide. Here is what I currently understand.

Aircraft/ Fighter/ Bomber

The Best Scout must be Classed as Rookie Pilot - NEVER Classed again. x/11/12 (or x/12/12).
If you class them as Fighters or DBs or TB they cannot fly Scout Planes any longer.
The Fighter stat is rarely used so a x/8/12 is fine. 11/8/12 if NF ever fixes the
Aircraft Stat.

The Best Fighter must be Classed as Rookie Pilot - then as Fighter to be able to fly Fighters.
(When this happens he gains Offensive Fighter growth and loses Defensive Bomber growth).
Once Classed Fighter he SHOULD NOT be Classed again.
(He loses out on Offensive Fighter growth but does not lose Defensive Bomber growth).
x/11/12 (or x/12/12), and this is better than a x/12/11.

The Best Bomber must be Classed as Rookie Pilot - then DB or TB to be able to fly Bombers.
(When this happens he loses Offensive Fighter growth and gains Defensive Bomber growth).
Once Classed Bomber he SHOULD be Classed up again and again.
(He loses out on Offensive Fighter growth which is rarely every used
but continues to GAIN Defensive Bomber growth).
x/11/12 (or x/12/12).
The Fighter stat is rarely used so a x/8/12 is fine.

So the Best Base Stat for all Scouts/Fighters/Bombers is x/11/12.

BINGO?
Is this correct based on Adalbert's assumptions in his Guide?

According to your formula on true ability... if you have no experts or veterans on your
sailor, the true ability is 0.

Great stuff, thank you for doing this (years ago I know). This has been the single most
helpful thing to help me 'get' NF as a new game to me.

Can you at least put a hint as to what AAW does? As in does it even help with guns
requiring the AA skill (until told otherwise I will assume yes because classing AA adds to
this ability... although classing rookie pilot adds to 'Aircraft' which is useless).

Also, as far as the sonarman goes, you make it appear as if there are break points,
between which additional ability isn't helpful. Is this true?

Do you not Class FIGHTERS because it Lowers their BOMBER Ratings,
and the increase of the FIGHTER Rating is not as important?

Would you Class BOMBERS because it Increases BOMBER Ratings,
and the decrease in the FIGHTER Rating is not important?

Is that True for SCOUTS as well? Treat them like Bombers?


Can Unclassed Pilots Fly Scouts, Fighters, and Bombers?
If you class a Bomber can he not Fly a Scout or Fighter?
If you can why not Class everyone as a Bomber?

What are the ideal Base Stats for Scouts, Fighters, and Bombers?

Please help. After reading your post I am assuming:
AirCraft / Fighter / Bomber

1) x/11 then 10 then 9 then 8 /12 for Scouts -- On occasion try to fight.

2) x/11/12 for Fighters
Are x/11/12 's better Fighters than x/12/11 's?

3) x/11 then 10 then 9 then 8/12 for Bombers
Does the Fighter Stat ever matter with Bombers?


So ideally, currently, one would never Class Past Rookie Pilots (Class 25) and Pilots
would be interchangeable. You choose what you want for the next Battle?
The same 8 x/11/12 Pilots could be used like this:
1 Scout / 3 Fighters / 4 Bombers one game (all x/11/12 Rookie Pilots) then
0 Scout / 8 Fighters / 0 Bombers the next?
0 Scout / 0 Fighters/ 8 Bombers?
