Just making a UK CV, I have my 8 pilots picked out so I just have to decide what the other 3 sailors will be. I've thought of a few thins and thought I'd ask and see what some more experienced UK CV players think.

 

The setup Im leaning towards most is 2 AA gunners and a sonarman, now that AA gunners can also use HH. The Midway looks like a good ship for both HH and AA with those 18 T slots.

 

However, I'm also considering replacing that sonarman with a restorer, although Im not sure what sort of SD a UK CV can reach without one, can it cap without a dedicated restorer? Is that even useful?

 

And then there is the option of not having gunners, which imo renders the sonarman useless. Inwhich case I could go for a restorer, engineer and seaman to boost the fighters. Or perhaps a restorer and 2 seaman.

 

I cant quite decide, so if anyone has any opinion to share please do.

iirc, sonarman doesn't work on anything bigger than a cl. Put him on an escort ship. On a RN crew you'll probably hit 900 SD without a restorer. If you have extra space to put a support, pick an engie.

Correction, a Sonarman does work fully on a CV. So the Sonar/2AA is definately an option.

A UK crew, especially with the extra crew above the 8 pilots, shouldn't have a problem reaching 900 SD, the +2 restore nation bonus will see to that. A restorer is thus wasted space on a large UK CV.

If you aren't going for the Sonar/ 2 AA option ( if using true AA gunners don't forget to class really really late), I'd think about using an engineer, repairer and seaman. Using a second seaman is always possible if you want the highest possible fighter ability you can get. Just be aware that seaman stack badly. An elite fighter seaman should give about a 5-6% boost at lvl 120, while the 2nd may add about an additional 2-3%. Whether that's worth it, is up to you.

Looks like Im going for the AA and Sonarman tbh, was hoping for more replies in 2 days but Ive got to pick my crew now.

Don't run your UK CV without torpedo bombers. I'm not biased, but the reasons should be obvious.

I'm going 4tbs 4ftrs, cos 6tbs seems too much, the fighters arent great and the dbs are useless.

Actually UK DB's are the 2nd worst in the game so they arn't Totally worthless xD. Plus UK tb's are the 2nd best in the game. RM Tb's has 1st place.

I dont think RM is better than UK at TBing...

 

RM TBs have less DP than UK (201 v 215), same fuel, less firepower for what its worth (38 v 40), but more sight (947 v 900) and a tiny bit more speed (503 v 500).

 

Basically 5% more sight vs 7% more DP. The Aircraft are about the same.

 

RM torps are speed 53, damage 5586 and speed 55, damage 8379.

UK torps are speed 62, damage 5686 and speed 57, damage 8527.

UK wins that one.

 

UK Bomber pilots reach a total +bomber of +21, giving a boosted elite bomber a total +bomber of +40. An ability, if being classed at level to 120 of ~3976.

RM Bomber pilots reacha  total +bomber of 18, giving a boosted elite bomber a total + bomber of +37. An ability, if being classed at level to 120, of ~3663.

UK is better again.

 

If you think 5% extra sight range and 0.06% extra speed (both being slower than even the slowest fighter anyway) is worth the 2% less damage, slower torps and later AAW immunity then yeah, RM TBs are better.

 

I'd rather have the superior torps personally. RM does have much better fighters though.
