Do I really need "seaman " on my ships?

what is their purpose, and can I not just use gunners or other support sailors on CV's? 

And if I should need them what should I roll for?

Seaman is mostly usefull for cvs. The seaman allows you to load the aircrafts much faster. Basic purpose of seaman is to improve all other sailors abilities. However due to the fact that it does not realy improve anythign by much people tend to use a rep or eng instead of the seaman for their bbs.

But said when it comes to cvs the seaman allows you to load planes faster as well as adds a bit to pilots abilities. They do stuck i believe so for example if you need 30 second to load planes without a seaman, with one it will drop to 27 with 2 i drops down to 25 and so on.

Ideal seaman are the original yellow sailors with +10 on all abiliites if you dont have one and u need one for cv then buy an elite ftr and make him a seaman. If you dont want to buy roll one with +12 on fighter ability.

If you are trying to roll one for bb checks their base rep/rest/engs stats. They say that a seaman will improve your spread as well on a bb. Never tested that though.

Do seaman actually reduce the time it takes to load a plane? I never really tried it. I might have to tonight to see.

But seamen are awesome for CVs. They boost the ability of every sailor slightly. Two seamen work a bit differently. The second seaman boosts the stats of the first seaman, whom boosts the stats for all other sailors.

Seaman no longer effect the aircraft load capability, all seaman assist with is plane endurance,pilot ability,and the ability of your ship. They do not effect the load time.

I have a KM Chief Seaman I carry on my Type IX SS5 sometimes (gunner slot). When my engineers were a lot lower and I was trying to get up to 40 knts, I found the Seaman would add some to the group.  My Seaman also pushes my SD to 900, whereas without him my SD is about 725 with just Sonar, Planesman, BO, Torp and 3X Engineers. 

Not sure if he has much impact, but if it helps the Planesman or engineers or sonar range or repair/rest...sounds okay to me.

I also carry a seaman on my CV.  The vet and expert death rates drop a whole lot.  It seems to help the pilots.

I did a lot of testing with low to high level seaman a couple of years ago, and found they can add up to 5% to most sailors abilities when using a high level seaman. This was back when you could still extrapolate data with DeBugView.

Well another thing you cannot forget about sm is how they stack and the loss of ability. Only the first one gets 100% everyone after that has a large decline of gain, and For the player using an sm on your ss, Yes the SM will give you gain on all ships, and you can make sm;s dedicated to your field of play. I myself know many bb players who use them on there bb's also & ss. But they change the characteristics to fit what they need wether gunner stat or support.

My testing included using multiple seaman as well. They do not stack. Using more than one will not give you any more of an ability boost than using the highest level one by himself. Using two that are of different levels will however bring the boost down to somewhere between the two, essentially lowering it compared to simply using the highest level/ability one alone. My advice is that if you use a seaman use ONE very good one. below is simply one set of data extrapolated from the game using DeBugView using IJN DP gunners as an example. The main gunners were already capped so you will see no change. the DP gunners are where you see the difference the seaman(s) made.

B65 with BB FCS using lvl104 gunners on PBB Main Guns and lvl73 DP Gunners on lvl36 4.7A DP guns on secondary
