Hello all, first I would like to say that I'm still fairly new to NF. I played a long time ago before they implemented the SS's, and still never got past the DD line for a given country. I played around with the IJN, KM and USN DD's (Never got past mid 20s lvl wise) and decided when I came back i'd try the RN route.

Currently I have a Tribal with lvl 25 BO, (2) lvl 25 gunners, and a lvl 25 spprt gunner, with a lvl 20 restore and lvl 20 engine*.

Right now i'm running a skeleton crew of my BO, (2) Gunners and my SpprtGunner for crew. On my Tribal I have the lvl 25 7.5" Mark VI w/ no armour and no torp slot.

I use this ship mainly in Blitz, and try to pick off ships with my range, trying to stay out of the main battle area due to reload times. I find I do ok damage and can survive if I don't go dueling with another ship.

I know Vets and Experts greatly increase the efficiency of a sailor, but should I be gambling the 10 vets to try and get an expert? I haven't had any luck the last couple times.

Also, when getting new crew, should I be looking for high ability stats AND high growth stats (ie. accuracy, reload, engine)?

*These are the default sailors given to you when you make a new account

TL;dr: Should I gamble for vets and whats the downlow on looking for new sailors?

From your questions I can tell you are indeed quite new with this game although you played it before.

But a few comments to your game play:
1) Tribal is the worst UK DD. The lvl16 Q.Class and the lvl24 L.Class are both better than it because Q.Class has 2 torpedo spots and L.Class can put on dual 6-inch guns with lots of belt armor.

2) Do NOT gamble with vets if you have NOT subscribed your Premium account.

3) Do NOT gamble with vets if your sailors do NOT have more than 250 rookies.

4) If you want 100-ish vets, do so when you subscribe your Premium account. If you want 200-ish vets, do so when there is an event that gives you 200% or 300% vet conversion rate (like the current event weekends).

5) As a new UK player, it's strongly recommended to level up at least 2 pairs of gunners (11/11 gunners are OK, which is what I'm using):
- One pair to be classed as ACC Huge Gunners at Lvl 65 directly from Lvl22. This pair won't let you regret when grinding in GB.

- One pair to be classed as RLD Huge Gunners at Lvl120 directly from Lvl22. You can use this pair of gunners for AA all the way to Lvl120, or as your main gunners after Lvl120. This pair of gunners will reach both ACC and RLD cap after Lvl120 while keeping the least possible weight of sailors, giving your more room for deck/bulge armor.

6) I'm not going to comment on the support sailor crew as there are controversies whether to class them on-time or not. I'm currently using 8 engines (classed late, Rpr/Res/Eng = 9-11/9-11/12), 1 repair (classed on-time, Rpr/Res = 12/11), 1 restore (classed late, Rpt/Res = 11/12). This is only my personal perference.

In the end, I do not recommend you to play UK unless you have a passion for UK. Please take a look at my response in another thread.

I don't understand why people are still saying UK is friendly to beginners. It's not like the old days when top ship level was 70-80-ish and Nelson had 14*4L blockshot whose range was a little shorter than othe nations.

Given the typical range shortage of UK, I won't say it's beginner-friendly any more. Before you can hit others in GB with at-level crew, you're probably pwn-ed by BB4-5-6 from all other nations, no matter how much armor you put on.

(Although, technically, there is one exception: if you use King George V, you can put on lots of deck armor and you can probably survive quite a few salvos from other BBs. However, this situation only applies when you use 15*2*3 main gun setup which means, with at-level crew, you can't do much damage to your enemies because 1) 15*2 gun's spread is horrible with at-level crew and 2) 15*2*3 has little firepower, which means a slow grind in GB anyways)

As a beginner, I would recommend you to play Italy because:
1) Italian ships are so freeking small that it's very, very, very, very difficult for any ship to one-shot you

2) Italian has low gun angles which means less hangtime in the air, which means advantage in both rushing and run-gunning

3) Italian shells have above-average shell damage and average range.

4) Italian has EOC guns you can use in leveling in Blitz, which I consider as bug guns because these guns have reload time of an FF gun + shell damage of a CA gun (or even BB gun) + range of a CA gun (or even BB gun).

5) Take a look at the size of Italian CL Romani. Isn't it ridiculous that it has FF size but also more damage point than many other CAs? SDE designed it this way because SDE begs you to play Italy.
