  • Japanese Ship Loss (UN Document)

Just sharing from Reddit for those who might not visit or might not have seen it.

Really interesting document showing the breakdown of documented Japanese Ship loss during world war 2. Just 1.6% of the United States Naval Fleet (SS) sank 55% of all Japanese Tonnage during the course of the war. Staggering!

And they managed it without 40 knt underwater speeds (because realism).

It also has a list of detailing engagements ordered chronologically.
Take a peak.

IJN failed to utilise effective convoy or ASW tactics. That's the reason behind this. Atlantic war would have been a German victory if Allies had not adopted to ASW and convoy tactics.

Decipher of enigma cost germans lose in atlantic from 1943 allies know where submarines where
IJN had bad asw so was easy for US subs to destroy IJN ships
US had also bad ASW but japanese used thier SS for defence which was total fail

Germans and british had best asw in ww2

And even with strong UK asw germans sunk most ships/tons with thier u-boats

During the war the U-Boats sank about 2,779 ships for total of 14,1 milion tons GRT. This figure is roughly 70% of all allied shipping losses in all theatres of the war and to all hostile action. The most successfull year was 1942 whean over 6 milion tons of shipping were sunk in the Atlantic

But forget one thing KM lost moust of subs during the WWII, i thing they lost more subs then UK, US, and IJN together.

US lost abaut 20% of subs durning WWII.

US have good ASW especially with war progres and caming great number of improvments (US have better soner then UK and KM (KM have I thing best passive echolots)).

Also there is some IF. IF the war against Japan take longer thr US subs didnt sung much more ships, because IJN fleet and merchmant fleet to the end of september didnt exist.

IF the war against Germany take longer Km subs will sing great number of allied merchmant sihip. (KM subs still have great number potencional tarets but USN not). Still USN subs win submarine war.

But the loses on allied ships was with great help of B-Dienst which can read "convoy code" for great part of WWII, and help to guide Sub wolfpack against convoys and GSCS also help convoy to evade sub wolfpack. Sometome win KM some time Allies. This stete was to April 1943 (there came great number of improvments to function together that they change tide of KM sub warfare.) when came great change and from this time Allied begin "hunt" sub instead sub hunt convoy.
