there are plenty of missing Anti-aicraft weapons, .50inch, 20mm, 37mm, 40mm guns in various single, double, and quad(or higher) mounts for all nations.

The Bofors 40mm was widely used during world war 2, but I cant find it as a piece of equipment. the 20mm Oerlikon was similarly used.

for equipment here's what I could find ingame

the german kriegsmarine has the quad 20mm

the british royal navy has the 7barrel(8in real life) "chicago piano" 40mm "pom pom".

========================

all those missing guns should be added to the equipment list for use as fully-automated "personal defense".

larger caliber 3-6inch AA guns are ment as Dual-purpose guns on naval gunships, for both use against light-medium naval targets, and for Anti-aicraft for supporting other ships. smal guns are ment mainly to defend the ship theyre mounted on as they dont have the range to support other ships from a distance.

Those smaller weapons are represented (not very well, I suppose) by the AAW fire from ships.

like you say, its represeneted not very well.

Most ships fire like they have a single 20mm.

the ships have dozens to hundreds of anti air guns.

the lvl 120 midway aicraft carrier carried 21 quad 40mms(84 guns total), 28 20mm, and 18 5inch guns for close, medium, and long range anti-air .

even small frigates would often carry 20+ guns of varying ranges.

If you check out WWII records on AA guns, you'll find that most ships couldn't defend very well with AA guns against planes. In NF, it is so much easier to hit a plane than in RL, apparently.

So, no, not rec'ed.

AA weapons were more or less effective based on caliber, target armor, and equipment used.

37mm and 40mm multi-barrel guns were the main naval weapons against aircraft. they were medium range, powerful enough to stop fighters and bombers and still had a high rate of fire.

Japanese kamikaze fighters during the last year of the war showed that stopping power in AA weapons was very important. Many ships over the war doubled or more their AA weapons, others replaced main guns, torpedo tubes, added more advanced radar and automated firing systems.

making (semi)Automatic FCS compatible AA weapons is both historical and something ive been suggesting.

The hardest thing for AA gunners during ww2 was just that big battles could have HUNDREDS of planes being launcher by multiple carriers on both sides.

====================

by the way, why isnt there any radar ingame? radar was a newer technology during ww2 but it was still used.

What would it do?

I did think like you, chaosticket, when I started playing this game.

Now, a few years later, I understand why NF can't mimic real life.

You should be happy that the game does get to a gameplay that is quite balanced and interesting. It wouldn't be like that if it tried to copy real life mechanics.

Radar is simulated by The outer fringe of ship range. When you can see dark shadows of ships just outside of sight range.

That is the game's representation of radar. In comparison in distance versus BB range, it does its job well in a relatively correct ratio between ship sight range, simulated radar range and the distance where it is required for recon scout aircraft for ship spotting for the vast majority of BBs in this game. As major radar advancements were mostly during the later 3 years of the war.

The ships in game with the greatest numbers of secondary AA batteries (40mm, 20mm and .50 cal Machine Guns) Are represented with higher AAW stats. Dealing damage to aircraft faster than ships with lower numbers of AA capabilities.

Due to graphical engine limitations, AAW graphically is only visable from the farthest part of the ship sprite. The underlying mechanics for AAW is quite usable for simulation of secondary AA batteries. grahpics being the only lacking (In a 2D Sprite game, if you care the about fine details in graphics, your crazy...)

Ships with high numbers of secondary AA batteries, have very high AAW stats, while ships with horrid secondary AA batteries (Like WWI early Dreadnoughts) Have low AA stats.

One, radar is important to detect AIRCRAFT. ingame the best warning you get is a verbal warning "AIRCRAFT DETECTED" when its in visible range. you could have 20 bombers coming or 1 scout.

Two, AA equipment and AA crew are different things. No matter how high your skill, you wont get anything close to the the german quad 20mm or british pom pom gun. Those two guns give both nations a major benefit. Theyre not the only ones to use AA guns, theyre just he only ones covered ingame.

Bottom line, fully (crew)automated AA guns, and radar should be added as equipment. The game may not 100+ AA guns on an aircraft carrier, but thats alot better than almost none.

This last statement is an opinion, but with the UK having the Pom-pom, they probably have the most durable ships.
