  • svchost.exe CPU bug

Hi, i sent this to GMs just before xmas they are testing it, but obviously with hackers and stuff ruining game they are busy, so id thought id make my 1st ever tech post. Apologies if a GM has already posted this.  Ill post it almost word for word as i sent to GMs. Besides, nothing else to do whilst server is down hehe :)

*Disclaimer* - Nothing is guaranteed, always do a system restore first. If it messes up your system please dont blame me :)

It revolves around a Win XP issue called the svchost.exe bug.

Here we go::

A bit of background, i used to play NFEU, and now NFNA, and every time the same problem occured . The ONLY time i crashed (like a lot of other players) was just after the start of a battle (<60 seconds) .

The issue was (Win XP - press control-alt-escape)- open windows task manager - see if svchost.exe is using 99% of CPU power--- If it is - thats what *might* be causing the crash's (my opinion only, AND causing the PC to run 'sluggish'!!!!).

The fix is -

Open windows update (on start menu), click turn OFF auto updates (left hand side)- *TOTALLY* off). Or do it via control panel, security options. Reboot

Check again, if still svchost.exe is running at 99% CPU power, click start then run - type in services.msc when that comes up, look at the name tab, select automatic updates, and click stop services (top left). Reboot

This sadly does not stop the start of game crashes 100%, but i went from a crash every 5 games (on NFEU AND NFNA) to a crash every 50.

The svchost.exe CPU using 99% problem is not specific to Navyfield its a common occurance.

Any1 whos having regular start of battle crashes, and can test this it would be grateful. Also any constructive comments, edits are welcome as well.

Best Wishes

There was I believe two Microsoft Hotfixes released back when SP3 was released for XP that address that issue.

Double check you have those two updates post SP3's release. That should perminately fix the scvhost issue.

Hi, thanks for reply. In my particular case i had all the 'hot-fix's from MS, but the problem still occured. Id be curious to see if any1 (it seems to be WIn XP based SP3 issue) has same problem (if your CPU is running at 99% as soon as you log on, you have a problem trust me lol :)

This bug is very common on freshly installed Windows XP (even with SP3), or on systems where updates are installed occasionally.

Windows Update is dependant on Internet Explorer, and all versions of IE (IE6, IE7 nad IE8) running under XP are affected.

So, if You are experiencing it, the best way to fix it is to manually download IE8 (if You arleady don't have it installed) and Cumulative security update KB2898785 from microsoft website. Before installing IE8, turn off Automatic Update (the quickest way to do it is typing in command prompt: "net stop wuauserv"), and disconnect from the internet - this will prevent that the bug occurs when installing IE8.
