1.) This belongs in tech support.

2.) NavyField (and many other older games) are very hit and miss in Windows 8.1

The best you can do is try installing the older DirectX libraries for Direct X 7-9.0c, which can be found with the Direct X Runtime Installer. As well as the 2005 C++ Runtime Libraries. From there see if the game runs or not. (Note the C++ runtime may not even let itself be installed.)

I have only once had a problem. It did not work with the first try. I downloaded from a different client and it works fine now. Crashes are very rare. I have an i5 intel and a 1GB Geoforce card.

Are you using ADM? I had very bad luck on my old laptop which used an ADM processor.

I had the same problem, I moved the game folder from program files to program files x86 the freezing stopped but still getting around 15fps, I won't be trying to get older directx as I have many newer games that require the latest.

Safest, is to install a 32 bit version to avoid frame stutter and reduce drastically crash.

Then you would need windows 7, unless you don't mind going back with windows xp that is no longer supported by Microsoft and has a security hole in it.

my solution:
VM virtualbox + win xp

Have they improved the virtual machines at all? A year or two ago I tried running NF in a Windows XP virtual machine (on a Windows 7 Pro laptop) to see if it would reduce the crashing. It did and didn't, as the game would apparently load but the screen would always stay blank, I'm sure it was an issue with the VM and my GPU not seeing eye-to-eye. Today I have an 8.1 laptop and am plain out of luck.
