Let me address a few things:

The sub should have targeted the Montana first, it is a higher value target.
True. The Montana at spawn is a problem. I've been on teams where 3 BB5's didn't move from spawn. This Monty didn't move at all. at the 9 minute mark, he was retreated from the room.

Simple. MOVE!!! I was in the ECV Katsuragi and looked to check out my competition north. I saw a tagless CV1 and a noob KM Graf Zepplin. At the start of the battle, I went north, preped, and launched TB's. I avoided the enemy fighters. I was able to find the enemy CV's quickly because they did not move from spawn. I launched my 8 Torps. 2 hit the CV1 and sank it. 6 hit the Graf Zepplin and sank it. Within the first 3 minutes of the battle, the enemy was down to 1 CV.
If I'm the biggest or best CV on my team, I'll go south. If I'm in a CV5 or above, I'll have sonar and phh. I play close enough to the battleline to detect a sub and have a good response time in my CV, but not so close that I disrupt the BB line. In most cases, I'll launch fighters first. I will then take about 30 seconds or so to kill enemy aircraft. After that, I put my FP over the enemy BB line to keep them scouted.
If I'm a smaller or less skilled CV, I'll go north. I'll attempt to shoot down scouts, then move my FP over the enemy BB line. If my team can handle north and south, I'll go mid. I may launch bombers first to target one of the enemy CV's. I may launch FP and try to kill all of the enemy scouts.
I'm always moving in my CV. I don't sit at the starting point. I don't jam the V key from the starting point and move in reverse at 5 -7 knots. BB's trust their CV's to kill planes, scout, and not play like noobs. CV's trust their BB's to kill enemy AA if it's in range.
