Figure 1 : grind a USN Ace Fighter(60) to level 120, skipping squad leader(75), give better ability among fix amount of vet.60k more fighter true ability, however a little bit heavier.Figure 2: grind a Fighter Pilot(40) directly to level 120 give you more recuits, thus improving overall performance.480k more fighter true ability, at the cost of more vet and expert.Figure 3: assuming the cap is 4.6M (some forum rumor), skipping Sq leader seems easier. Skipping Ace Fighter however make it worse. However, the difference is 4 vets. Conclusion:Skipping squad leader pliot couldn't provide a dominant advantage. However, using hero sailors give you at least 4x repair/restore ability!

That's all nice and nets a super-awesome fighter pilot.
But something happened during the game. Those 6 fighter pilots you had circling were engaged by two squadrons of fighter pilots from the enemy CVs and were ripped to shreds. When your planes engaged the the first squadron...they didn't see the 2nd squadron who took them out.
A good 12+ or elite fighter from any nation is competitve, even with fewer vets. A tune-up of attack or defense will change the dynamic.
