  • Gun damage and range? It's confusing.

    08. 06. 2011 20:01

MrSparkle
I chose KM for their SS, just got my Z1 DD, and wow there's a lot of gun choices and no indication whatsoever of their damage or range.

I originally fitted the 4.1"/45 Flak L/45 L, then fitted the 4.1"/45 SK C/32 L, and the SK seem to do a bit more damage (maybe). I have no idea what the difference is between these guns though other than the high angle and muzzle velocity.  How can I tell without experimenting? Is there no "damage" stat in this game? Is damage maybe related to muzzle velocity?

Flak guns are obviously AA guns, but I have no idea what SK guns are, and I have no idea how to determine the damage or range of all these guns. It makes the choice between them very confusing.

What's the secret to figuring out damage and range? There has to be a way by looking at the stats ingame. I'm thinking muzzle velocity has to do with range, but I can't figure out what might have to do with damage.

Even trainworld does not list damage or range so far as I can tell, although there's AA damage for AA guns.

It's also impossible for me to search the old forum. It doesn't work, so I'm forced to ask here in a new thread.

SK is a designation:

In the period before and during World War I, German guns were designated by their bore diameter in centimeters, "SK" meaning naval cannon, and their nominal overall length in calibers. So, for example, the designation 30.5 cm SK L/50 meant a naval gun firing 30.5 cm (12.008-inch) projectiles with a barrel whose overall length was 30.5 x 50 cm long - 1525.0 cm (600.4 inches). The second method was for guns designed in the period between 1920 and 1940 where the length figure was dropped in favor of the Construction Year (Model Year). For example, under this nomenclature system the guns carried by the Bismarck were designated as 38 cm SK C/34. This designation meant that these were naval guns firing 38 cm (14.96-inch) projectiles whose design was begun in 1934. The third method was adopted in 1940 and under this system guns were designated by their bore in centimeters, "KM" meaning naval cannon and the Construction Year. For example, the designation 10.5 cm KM44 was for a 10.5 cm (4.1-inch) naval gun designed in 1944.

There is no accurate damage stat in game. All damage numbers are from tests between ships.

There is also no calculable range value.

Damage wise, 80% of the time, the large the caliber of your gun, the more damage it does. Between nations and special gunsets, there are certain exceptions. For example, there used to be a set of trip 12" SN guns that out damaged a set of trip 14" guns.

Range wise, it's usually what ever is a higher level. L guns> guns> D guns for all nations except MN and SN.

So SK are anti-ship guns, and Flak are anti-air? I'm not seeing a difference in damage really. SK have slightly greater range and slightly higher muzzle velocities, so I'm thinking muzzle velocity is an indication of range. It's the same with L vs D vs normal: L have higher velocity and higher range, D lower velocity and lower range, and normal are in between.

Velocity has to indicate range somehow. Low level guns seem to have a direct correlation between muzzle velocity and range. The level 15 dual 3.46" Ls have a very high velocity of 1045, and from what was said in the DD to BB guide:

"One option available to you is to use the lvl 15 dual 3.46"Ls, which have the best ranged
guns available to any national DD at DD1 level"

...it makes perfect sense that velocity has something to do with range. It's the high level guns that throw it off for me though. The 14" have lower velocities than the mid level guns, but there's no way they're shorter range (the L, D, norm rule still applies). The dual 16" and 18" guns are also similarly lower velocity.

Is there a gun range chart for KM? I found one for US, but I can't search the old forum for a KM one. It would help immensely if I found it.

No there isn't. At least I have never seen one. But there is Splid's DD to BB guide. It suggests which weapons to use on which boats. Being KM means you almost always use the longest range gun you can fit. The guide should give you some ideas.

Flak is the german abbreviation for Flugabwehrkanone which is anti-aircraft cannon.

for the range chart well look in the old forum data of the tips and tactics section. there was one..outdated for some guns and not 100%precise but good enough to get an idea of how good they are..

edit: search in the old tips and tactics section for "Gun Range Data of All Nations (Tabled)"

edit2: may helps: look in the old KM forum data for splid dd to bb guide or the shipsetup guide (both are stickis)

So I'm wrong in thinking I can compare muzzle velocities ingame to get an idea of which guns are longer range? There's just no way to tell when looking at that long list of guns?

I'm also assuming angles play a part. A gun with a high angle of 30 will probably not have the range as a similar caliber gun with high angle of 45. But again, there's just no way to tell?

Damage and range seem as basic to show ingame as gun level and angle, and it's strange that there's no indication of either. I saw that you can see the damage of the various shells AFTER you've bought a gun, but not BEFORE. I want to know BEFORE I spend the credits.

It seems simple to add that shell info when browsing the guns, and I don't know why they didn't.

If u use the guns in blitz, Damage per second>Damage per salvo>>>range...

Damage per second of a turret is the first priority for selection..
You asked the 4.1" so the reloading would be the factor.

Just choose the fastest one 4.1" and grind for the higher tier guns and ships.

1/ Range issue:
Muzzle velocity indicate range only if you compare the guns of the same type ( e.g. SK34b).
For KM index means:
L = Long guns ... long range, heavier weight, longer reload
D = Short guns ... short range, less weight, shorter reload
without index ... middle variant

And if you need to compare range of different type of guns (e.g. SK34 and SK33) just equip them (e.g. 1st type on bow guns, 2nd ones on stern bows) and test it in test misson.
--------------------------------------------------------------
2/ Damage issue:
Base damage of shell can be seen when you load your ammo. KM guns have often 3 types of shell:
Leight ... light damage, longer range
Normal
Heavy ... heavy damage, shorter range

There is also calculation how different shells loose their energy (so inflicted damage) based on distance and angle and how shells damage heavier ships ... lets simply say that bigger guns loose energy less and can inflict more damage to heavier ships.

Forget the damage displayed at the shell info. The damage calculation is actually rather complex. It depends on what you hit and at which angle. Target's armor also plays a role. The number showing up in the info screen doesn't really tell you much.

I know, this all sounds rather illogical. But that's how it is. Don't worry though. You'll get a hang of it quickly.

SK is german for QF (Quick Fire) gun, meaning they are gun which are design for rate of fire in mind.

Want an even more confusing question.

So... In terms of damage and range.

Heavy Shells get higher damage but less range, Medium Shells get middle damage range, Light Shells get less damage more range.

In terms of Guns damage and range.

L Guns get more range, less damage
N Guns get average range/damage
D Guns get low range, higher damage

The big questions is...

Would it be better to have D guns using Light shells
OR
Would it be better to have L guns using Heavy shells

Do D guns shooting Light get more range and or damage than
L guns using Heavy?
