  • Armored QV revisited

There is a thread in the old forum data on whether to armor QV or not. Most QVs (over 90%) nowadays are armored. And I have tried both setups, while armor is effective against some ships (KM), I feel with the new patch and the buff to SN and IJN bb6 armored penetration, and increase in gun angle, speed is more important. Against SN bb6, armored QV is difficult to play, having same speed, significant worse range, and useless armor. It's even worse against Amagi, being 4 knots slower. So do people still think armored QV is better setup, either for GB or HA? Is SW QV viable option in competitive environment? Please discuss

I play it AW, because I already have a RM6, which I found similar to a SW QV... Besides people rarely use AP vs AW ships and despite the turning rate you are still able to dodge salvo's from the P24 and Amagi. I haven't tested it yet with my own P24/Amagi, but I believe when you go below angle 40 that the armour should be working again.

For your information, QV could bounce amagi at 39-40 degree all day, pre-patch. Similar was againt P24. Now you need to go really under, around 30-35 to bounce.

The Lion 2 and other BB could penetration QV armour by shooting in the 37+, this is where the turn off is.

This is why angle 45 needs to excel at armour penetration, not only from the angle itself but also in a general gameplay perspective.

Why bother, why didnt you just remove armor altogether if they pen with HE anyways it doesnt matter.

The actual changes itself seem pretty oke so far. The angle is fine, range is actually fine so far against all other tiers... xD

If you are playing QV unarmoured, 99% of the time you are doing it wrong.

You have to consider when you are rushing a ship, lets say for example an Amagi to get under his 40 deg angle, he is not the only BB shooting at you. That armor is protecting you from a lot of smaller BBs and CAs as well.

Just curious guys. We are assuming an AW QV with 11" deck armor right?

There are definitely situations where armored QV has advantage. One example would be coordinated rush with non armored ships on your team. This forces opponenets to choose between shooting at armored or unarmored targets, likely with wrong ammo type. But I hesitant to say armored QV is better in general. Five knot speed advantage is not a trivial sacrifice to make for immunity to some ship types at max range, and only if they choose wrong ammunition. Interestingly, back in the old forum, majority opinion is that QV is better played unarmored, probably because it was different game back then with only 4 nations. Personally,  my crew is bit too heavy, so I can only fit 10.5'' with 30 bulge or 10.8 (or 10.9) with no bulge. That is partly why I don't like armoring, since I cannot do full 11'' deck.  Does that 0.5'' make a big difference?

I could be wrong but that extra 0.1 to get you to 11inches makes a big difference, I think at 11 inches it can bounce all bb6 HE shells - I might be wrong though

Yes, that 0.1" could make all the difference between a penetrating and a bouncing shot.

I'd say, however, from what I understand of the recent BB6 balancing, Amagi and P24 HE ammo should still penetrate RN armour at max angle (45°) - that was the point of the patch IMHO.

If you want, we could try it out together - you have an Amagi, don't you? I have an L2 onto which I can fit 12" armour (with incomplete crew).
