After much struggle I finally solved it. The issue I was having was that when trying to run the game in full screen mode, there was terrible stuttering and distortion and no sound except music.

I'm running an AMD Vega Frontier graphics card and using onboard realtek audio on a Asrock z97 motherboard. I noticed I didn't have these issues on an Acer laptop with a Nvidia 950m which also uses an Intel igpu for 2d acceleration.

To solve it, I simply switched my desktop over to Intel onboard graphics and installed the realtek audio driver from Asrock. It's a bit of a pain to swap to onboard graphics just to play NF, but I'm glad I get to play again.

I'm thinking this may be an issue with AMD graphics cards in general. I hope this helps.
