  • Can Not Load File: YF.data

    09. 18. 2011 21:14

Invinciblor
Getting this debug message on NF startup, and then an access violation crash immediately afterwards.

- I have restarted.
- I have applied the corrupt data fix correctly, including checking md5s (that is, the fix that contains YF.data, not the bad sprites fix)
- I have manually deleted the 90ish SPR files that FDList mentions (see below), and re-downloaded them via the patcher (followed by exiting patcher, deleting FDList, re-applying the data corruption fix, and trying to start the game)

None of these fix the problem or cause a different problem; I'm always back to the YF.data message when I delete FDList and start the game. I tried to delete YF.data and add it to FDList, but the patcher refuses to download it. However, the 1.327 data files fix has YF.data, and the hashes check, so I don't think that's the problem.

I would apply the sprites fix, except that doesn't include the sprites in my FDList -- the sprites its putting in there are quite large files. They're the exact same files every time, too.

Tried reinstalling from 1.237 fresh; same problem.

Tried re-applying both data file and sprite fixes to the new install; same problem.

Your list of missing files is way too long. They're missing because you deleted them yourself (when you shouldn't have). FDList is not a list that NF deletes. It's a list that the updater will download and install.

You will need to uninstall and reinstall NF. Assuming you have downloaded v1.327 recently, you'll need to install, then apply the spr and .data fixes. Once you have, DELETE the file, FDList (only if you've done the manual fixes). If you have used the automated installer, just run NF.

No, that list was that long before I messed with anything. After re-downloading them several times over through the patcher (and then deleting FDList and applying the fix files every time) with no change in outcome, I decided to try removing them to be sure they were actually being replaced (which they were). I made backups of those SPR files first, which I used to verify some of the md5 hashes afterwards.

As mentioned above, my latest attempt at fixing the problem was an uninstall and reinstall, I then applied the fixes again and nothing changed.

In hindsight, I think I should have uninstalled hackshield and the enfuns updater as well, and not just NF, prior to reinstalling NF. I'll be trying that next.

thanks ahead of all your contributions to the tech support,

but after all methods, including your auto fixes, i'm still remain having the same prob as invin did,

and exactly the same 98 files keep looping for auto download even through they're actaully still exists
BEFORE or AFTER updater redownload.

Method i tried so far include using your auto fixes (and manually using your fix files),
transfering a fully working NF files set from another OS,computer,
Using installer from NF1310, NF1324 and NF1327 [ none make it though the prob],
or even extreme method, formatting the installing HDD sections, and last option, reinstalling OS for 3 times.

for all sake, it remain the same results - can not load file: YF.data, but where when it pops up it is right in the
installing locations.

this is what's it is looks like http://i53.tinypic.com/2q3t0us.jpg
[ignore that the system altered to open .dat with notepad, editing minecraft dat before.]

Did like to seriously ask, are that only happening to win vista/7 ultimate ?

@Both of you

Reinstall NF, then run the MD5 Checker and post your results (you may click save and save it as a text file so it's easier to copy). Please only include errors, not the whole list. Don't mess with any files!

The checksums after my first install (and subsequent application of the fixes) were all okay, with the exception of Thumbs.db which was missing (which is an OS artifact anyways).

After another fresh fresh install of 1.327, here are the five errors:

MISSION\NFNMFMBK201.KMF ERROR: Checksum did not match.
SPR\ITFFM.spr ERROR: Checksum did not match.
SPR\ITFPDITM2.spr ERROR: Checksum did not match.
SPR\ITPNFS2.spr ERROR: Checksum did not match.
SPR\Thumbs.db ERROR: B:\SD EnterNET\NavyFIELD\SPR\Thumbs.db does not exists.

Got it working again!

The critical step is to restart BETWEEN uninstalling and reinstalling.

Then I was back to successfully starting the game, with the data file corruption error (because of the new install). And by now, I'm an expert at repairing that.

that means most likely is register file problem then, seems work for vista but sofar it did not work for me before.

back to the md5 check, same results as yours, but i run another check on my healthy set from another OS/ PC,

although resulting 52 errors (since some was ship sprites) ,but the core spr errors are different then that 5.

I guess i just need to acccept i'm having pretty much bad luck to upgrade my pc to win7

Yeah, a guy with a netbook was having the YF.data issue and he said he had to actually crawl through his registry manually and clear stuff out before the problem would go away, which is what made me pay attention to the restarts in between (I tried to manually delete registry entries like he did, but the uninstall got them all anyways).

(That guy with the netbook didn't get to play anyways, of course, since it's a netbook, but he did fix his YF.data crash.)

Well that's a limitation of hash checks--they don't tell you if a file is bad, only if it's an exact bit-for-bit copy of a known working file. It's entirely possible that some divergent files will work (like sprite mods that don't cause crashes).

Honestly I'm pretty shocked and sympathetic that you've reinstalled your OS multiple times and that hasn't fixed your problem.

This continues to happen to me occasionally, and I've noticed a pattern:

Every time it crashes, the patcher was launched via the Vista start menu "pinned" applications. These aren't actual Windows shortcuts per se; right clicking and choosing properties for the applications pinned there shows the properties of the application files themselves, whereas the properties for the desktop shortcut have the extra tabs and fields of a shortcut, e.g. "shortcut" tab, "find target" button, "start in" field, etc.

The desktop shortcut for the NF launcher has the exact same compatibility settings (Run in Win98/ME mode & disable visual themes) as the start menu pinned app does, yet the start menu-pinned launcher will always start the game with the YF.data crash. (Note to others browsing the tech support forum: running the /launcher/ with compatibility settings probably isn't doing anything, though that's not relevant to my issue here.)

Using the pinned application used to work. Perhaps there's an issue with the current working directory not being set correctly between the launcher and the game itself.
