  • IJN SS5

Rundu
So we finally have the long awaited IJN SS5 ...and yes - it can launch planes.

Some observations:

1.   It has 6 forward tubes - each hitting @ 24k =  144K/salvo - one shots here we come! - so it hits very very hard  -the splash damage is also impressive
2.   It can carry a lot of  torps   6 x 8 + 1
3.   There are no rear torps  - this limits ss vs ss action
4.    It is BIG and SLOW - so it makes a good target for other subs
5.    It is very tough and can take some hits and still come out swinging hard
6.    It has a lot of air, which makes up a little for the slow speed
7.    It has a beautiful decorative AA/HE gun which is almost useless.....although I did get a puff of smoke off a plane once.
8.    It has 7 support slots - so you could run 5 engies, wow - pity I dont have 5 ijn engies!?

now if we could just lose some of the exp nerf on subs..................

In my opinion, it is a STUPID sub. who wants planes on a ship designed to stay under water? who wants 6 torpedo tubes when you had 8? who cares about more powerful torpedoes when you used to fire 2 more? who wants a slower, slower turning, bigger sub when movement is the most critical thing?

and who has a level 98 torpedo man? I have a 104 sub BO, but only a 95 torpedo man. You know how long it is going to take to get him up?

This is such a waste!!! NF needs to think out of the box! Sorry for being so negative. At least the Gato class was done right, after all it was the best sub of the war and it should be the best of the game.

Oh man i want to play the ss5´s, being able to play, but not having the resources to play, watch how everybody to play and you are staying out of the play. Feels like a ejected soccer Coach watching his team playing, having all thoughts to share with his team, but sitting down there with the fans.

I will be happy to see some pictures, please. that thing gotta look huge!!!

I have 2 level 120 torpedoman :)
the levels are fine, i guess they still under leveled, they need to be at least 103. but i guess its ok.
Submarines dont make the players, players makes the sub.if used properly.

Great Humberto. I know the torpedos slots are level 98 -- something else is wrong. Do you have the sub BO to go with them?

OK -- I did play my SS5 once tonight and here are good points:

1) The sub is COOOL looking. I always liked the HEI, but I think I might like the SS5 better.

2) SD 900!!! In a SUB -- unbelievable....

3) Speed almost matched the HEI (on surface OH, 31 vs 32 -- didn't play long enough to pay attention to the others). Good thing is I can carry another engineer, so my OH was much longer.

4) The planes load fast. You carry 10 and can have 3 per pilot flying at one time. I'm happy NF made so many planes available to the sub. There are good at some levels. Think of it this way -- you can now hit another sub, no matter what the position and you can hit him very quickly -- he won't have time to crit dive if you do it well, and you can hit him while in crit dive. Finally, you have a method of attacking ships from far range -- no other sub can do this. You can even scout now to find out where that ornery flag is hiding. Really changes game play.

5) I sunk a sub while in Crit Dive!!! It was hilarious. So, I have no sub torpedos, but saw my BBs getting taken out by a SS4 or 5. I got close enough to see him with sonar, he turned to take me out. A friendly KM hits him and then goes out of play. The guy comes for me and I crit dive. Luckily, I have 3 TBs flying around. While the guy is waiting for me to come up, I hit him with all three planes. It was glorious.

I don't know if this sub is going to ruin the game for me or make it better. I am going to put one of my torpedo men on the Akagi and get him leveled up with two TB pilots (close to TB3). Then we will see what I think of the ship. It will definitely change my style of play.

My submarine crew they are almost all as 120, except My repairman which is 106 and one engineer as 116 but the rest of my crew are 120, which gave me 900 SD with alot of efforts in my ss4.( of course not to affect certain things to keep sonar superiority over others.)

Sorry, but i am GREATLY disappointed by this SS. painfully slow, cant turn, handles like a barge in a hurricane. I have 5 engies on it, 3 are lvl 101 or better, and the best i can get is 33 knts on OH and without OH 19 submerged...19 ! waste of 3 mil creds.

Well in theory you could use the 3 TBs to your advantage an a straight up ss vs ss fight.

Sadly they share the torpspace with regular sub torps.

Tempus -- do you realize that lower engies combined with higher engies can actually reduce your total speed. Check out the posting about how sailors levels impact play. For every engy on the ship, there is a reduction in points for the higher level engies. You don't want to mismatch them. For example, 1 120 level engie will get full use of his points, but you put the 120 engie with a level 30 engie, only 70% of the 120 points count and something like 50% of the level 30 points count. I don't have time to do the research tonight, but you really need to look it up. You would probably be better off playing with the 3 level 101's and no more. Put in a repairman or restorerer or TB, or even better a seaman and your speed might go up.

Like has been said in different posts, at least all nations (except US) suffered with these new subs.

Man, this sub is hard to play well, but it is a lot of fun!
