from what i saw it has a tight turning radius, but its too slow for sub fighting.

Just got my Italian ss5. I agree with all the comments above. The torps are the same power  as IJN ss torps, most powerful in the game. The ss3, ss4 & ss5 all have 4 front and 4 rear tubes which is nice. I am starting with 35 torps loaded in front and 16 in rear, may go to 12 in rear. Will see. The critical issue with the RM subline is speed, or more accurately lack of speed. I have 3 engy's lvl 93, 87 and 86. All are bve with 150+ vets each and my starting speed in the ss5 is 22/31.  The crew is BO 97, 2 torpers 97, sonar 93, planesman 93, rep 78, 3 engy 86, 87, 93.

The ship has 5 supp slots(3 engy, sonar, planesman) 2 r slots on ship, 2 torps slots and and BO. If I take off the two engies and the rep(he is in a R slot) I still have 22/31 for speed. The SD drops from 724 to 384. The speed issue is considerably lower than that of all other nations ss lines.

I will add that the ships manuever very well, turn tight and are very narrow in profile but the lack of speed is a challenge. If this happened in a bb line people would be screaming. This same combination of crew and engy's on the ss4 produced 23/32 for speed. I hope this issue is addressed and corrected. I was hoping that higher lvl engy's might solve it but the comment above that lvl 120 engies don't help is very disappointing. I don't expect them to be better than all other nations, but I do expect them to be comparable in speed.

I will add that I have ss5 subs in all nations as a basis to make this comparison.

I think you're suffering from your engineers too low.  I run a KM SS5 and my 3 engs are 115, 105, 95.  So my speed is 25/33 - 32/38 (OH).  All SS4 and SS5 max out at 34/40 OH.  If I take my 115 engy back to my SS4, I pull 33/39 OH.

The SS5 requires higher level crews to extract the performance out of them, (speed, air recharge, sonar, and torp reload speed).

FACT: A low level crew in a high level sub will not be as effective as a high level crew in a lower level sub.

Also, I use a Chief Seaman in the R slot instead of a repairman.  The Seaman helps all the other sailors in their performance and my SD is at 900.

I got ss5 in every nation to, and definatly the slowest.

I found if i took my lowest vet eng at 160 vets lvl 97 off i could get 34 OH, but with all my slots filled only get 22/33

Agree to what has been said, RM subs have nice turning and manuvourable,  good torp damage and with the 4 front and 4 rear torp tubes on ss4/5  its a good all round sub.

I hope there is a speed buff to it soon.

Yes my engy's need to be higher buton the test server with 120 engy's at 240 vets the best that can be realized is 36knots OH. It needs to be buffed.

The lack of speed is just outrageous. Even assuming that they should be the slowest SS nation the difference between RM and other nations is HUGE.

SS4 going max with 34/35 on surface and SS5 32/33? It's a joke. And I'm talking with BB6 Engies (BVE and stuff). Every nation SS4 with 2x120 Engies and full crew is easily going cap speed of 40. RM 35.

I have got "only" 5 SS5 and I am amazed how slow RM subs are. I'm sure that it wasn't planned and just badly implemented.

I see no point in using RM subs in any competitive conditions.

The 5/1/2013 patch corrected the engine problems.  My Itallian SS4 and SS5 go 40 knots now on the surface.

-RM SS Engine II

Power : 3400 -> 3900

-RM SS Engine II (Light)

Power : 3060 -> 3510

-RM SS Engine II (Heavy)
