With UK Fighters, they aren't as inferior as people say. The T3 (Seafire) hold their own and have great range and fuel. They also have enough speed and firepower to cause severe damage. They've got good range too. I can run intercepts anywhere on the map from the opposite corner.
All planes run the risk of being ovewhelmed (5 vs 2) or running out of ammo or fuel, so even USN T4s get shot down frequently. When my boys go up against a flock of enemy birds, they get shot up, but I get a lot of them too. You learn early on not to have any heartstrings for lost pilots and end up just throwing everything up into the air as much as you can and hope you have enough planes to last the game.
I'm sure Admiral Nimitz felt bad for boys not coming back, but that didn't change his mind about sending more up right behind them.
