Hi Overlord77. Those are the real deal. They have a group of volunteers who work long hours bringing these wonderful planes back to life.

The Midway Museum has become one of the top places to visit now here in San Diego. There are many volunteers who will answer your questions or help you through out the ship. Many of them at one time or another spent time aboard when she was still in service. I have a close friend who is in charge of her (flight deck & hull) restoration. There are flight sims, a new movie theatre going in. The tour itself which comes with a recorded/video slides at you walk from station to station, takes about 2 plus hours. Parked across from the Midway is NAF North Island and usually there are a couple of Nuc CV's parked a stones throw away.

It is a great adventure and if anyone is ever in southern california. This is the place to visit.

Believe it or not, it was not planned, or wanted.

Here's the truth behind it:

1.) the woman wasn't a nurse. She was a dental assistant who had heard rumors the war had ended and went down to Times Square to see if it was true.

2.) The woman wasn't from the US. She was Austrian. (IE part of germany at the time.) She fled in 1939 with her younger sister, and when the war ended did not know if her parents were alive or dead at the hands of the Nazis. (Sadly they died in one of the camps.)

3.) The man (George) doing the kissing was quite drunk, and does not remember the kiss to this day.

4.) It was an assault.  To quote Greta (the woman) "And then I was grabbed. That man was very strong. I wasn't kissing him. He was kissing me."

Greta's husband (now) when looking at the photo noticed the odd manner in which she was holding her hand.  Greta explained it thus "You know, when you get very tense, your arm stiffens up and your thumb sticks out like that."  In one of the earlier photos (before this one was taken) Greta can be seen trying to push the sailor away.

Meaning that the iconic V-J day photo...is nothing more than a sexual assault that was never prosecuted.

I love hearing that story.  It doesn't mesh very well with the story other people tell though.

The sailor and several others were going up the street celebrating.  They were kissing girls at random.

She was indeed surprised but says she herrself wouldn't callit a sexual assualt. she was kissed by surprise.

They've actually been together in parades and neither has any ill will.  She says she saw him kiss several other girls on his way up thje street and when he left her he went on to kiss several more.

Looking at the pic and the other people in it, nobody seems alarmed or as if they're watching an assault.

I dont know who we thank for butchering and perverting history but I guess we will keep going until nothing is what it was.

When you go inside the hanger you'll see a combat flight simulator that you can get inside and chase German fighters that also try to shoot you down.  What the public doesn't know is that the enemy planes are piloted by real people in another room with more simple computers.  When I was in training as a sonar tech, I was sent over several times (and took my wife with me a few times) to act as an enemy plane.  It was a lot of fun.
