  • Gun damage and range? It's confusing.

MrSparkle
I chose KM for their SS, just got my Z1 DD, and wow there's a lot of gun choices and no indication whatsoever of their damage or range.

I originally fitted the 4.1"/45 Flak L/45 L, then fitted the 4.1"/45 SK C/32 L, and the SK seem to do a bit more damage (maybe). I have no idea what the difference is between these guns though other than the high angle and muzzle velocity.  How can I tell without experimenting? Is there no "damage" stat in this game? Is damage maybe related to muzzle velocity?

Flak guns are obviously AA guns, but I have no idea what SK guns are, and I have no idea how to determine the damage or range of all these guns. It makes the choice between them very confusing.

What's the secret to figuring out damage and range? There has to be a way by looking at the stats ingame. I'm thinking muzzle velocity has to do with range, but I can't figure out what might have to do with damage.

Even trainworld does not list damage or range so far as I can tell, although there's AA damage for AA guns.

It's also impossible for me to search the old forum. It doesn't work, so I'm forced to ask here in a new thread.

Ouch lol. D guns do more damage than N and L? That's another thing I did not know.

D guns using light vs L guns using heavy. Well, everyone recommends L guns. I never see anyone recommend D guns. They also recommend light unless you're in a low level ship.

My guess is range is more important than damage, but geez they made this rather complicated and don't give us this info ingame.

D guns have shorter reload. Thus they do more damage over time. But the damage of 1 salvo is the same if you use the same shells. Yet D guns have significantly reduced range. The tiny reload advantage is not worth it.

D guns: shorter reload time, less range, less space required (and often lighter)
N guns: Average
L guns: longer reload time, more range, more space required (and often heavier)

HHE: More damage, less range
HE: Average
LHE: Less damage, more range.

For KM, once you're out of blitz, use L guns with LHE.

One thing people have never mentioned: AP shells. Are they ever used?

Yes they are. Thankfully there are only a few setups that force you to use AP shells. This is mostly about UK ships such as PoW, Nelson, L1, L2 and QV. If your LHE shells do extremely low damage (or even 0 damage) this means the target uses extreme deck armor. Playing KM this means you have to switch to AP to hurt them.

The question still stands.

Which gets further range...

D guns shooting LHE shells

or L guns shooting HHE shells?

Of course, KM shells do not caus any damage in any set up so it is a mute point in KM forum.

I'm noticing that too. Geez KM guns are weak. I'm going SS though.

It depends on the guns I'd guess, but I'd be ready to bet D guns with LHE gets more range. Feel free to test it in the test servers, or even in game.

Take an H44, mount different guns with different ammo loadout and fire in a test mission.
