Battleship Iowa to be Los Angeles museum

The Iowa, first of four identical battleships, was commissioned in 1943. It is 887 feet long, and displaces 48,000 tons. It is armed with nine 16-inch guns, the largest ever mounted on an American battleship. The guns could fire a shell 23 miles. The Iowa served in World War II, in the Korean war, and was laid up and recommissioned as part of President Ronald Reagan's expansion of the Navy. However, in 1989, an explosion in the ship's No. 2 turret killed 47 sailors.
The Navy at first said the explosion was sabotage and blamed a gay sailor who was supposedly attempting suicide. However, a further investigation discredited this theory and the Navy apologized to the sailor's family. The ship was taken out of service in 1990 and has not sailed on its own power since. In 2001, the Iowa was towed from Newport, R.I., to the Ghost Fleet on Suisun Bay, a 5,700-mile voyage that took 43 days and cost $3 million.
The Navy said the battleship will be towed in the next few weeks to a San Francisco dry dock, to be refurbished for the sea voyage to Los Angeles this fall.

Great to hear that another WWII era ship will bealbe to live on within the historic fleet! Unlike the ex USS Sanctuary Hospital ship that has recently left for its final voyage back in mid August.....

YAY! She's been in service a long time. Time to finally put her to a long rest.

Please, that's like saving only the 2nd paragraph of the Magna Carta. Nice gesture, but without the whole thing it's just a curiosity at best.

I know how strapped for cash Britain was after the war, but they should have saved HMS Warspite at the very least, darn them. And there's little excuse for not having laid up HMS Vanguard. Crying shame.

There's a huge lift of BB they should have saved...

HMS Warspite
HMS Queen Elizabeth
HMS Valiant
HMS Malaya
HMS Nelson & Rodney
HMS KGV, Duke of York, Anson and Howe

11 BB's that we could have saved but didn't. We have HMS Belfast on display but I bet Nelly would have looked ALOT better on the Thames. Oh well, we still HMS Victory.

Wow. Only the modern supercarrier can rival the beauty and magnificence of the classic warships. I am particularly enthralled by the top down view of the Iowa firing her guns, and seeing the shockwave in the water. Such power. I sincerely hope that L.A. appreciates that they are recieving what is arguably the most powerful class of battleship ever constructed (Iowa-class and Yamato-class tie for best, IMO), and doesn't disgrace her by doing stupid things like when American Idol was hosted on the U.S.S. Intrepid (CV-11 in New York) a few weeks/months/IDC ago. I also feel obliged to brag that, at the mere age of 14, I have visited the U.S.S. Intrepid (CVN-11 as mentioned above), the U.S.S. Alabama (BB-60), and the U.S.S. Drum which is moored in the same park, and the U.S.S. Texas (BB-35), which I live not too far from (I live in Harris County, too). Luckily for me, I can appreciate these ships for what they truly are, unlike many teenage children.
