  • Iowa surprise

I was unhappily surprised with the upgrade from sodak to iowa. I found that the ship seems to be a "tweener". It doesn't quite have the range that I need to deal with bigger BB. At the same time, its slower, so I can't get into and out of a fight like I could before. My current setup is:

Iowa
3 16/50 Ns with light shells ( I started with  normal and switched hopping the range would be better; turned out to be about 1/4 of an inch)
3 high level engineers giving a max speed of 39

Sodak
3 16/45 Ls with normal shells
3 high level engineers giving a max speed of 47

Maryland
4 16/45 with normal shells
3 high level engineers giving a max speed of 39

SO, the Iowa as I have it is giving me slightly more range than the Sodak, at the cost of a ton of speed, so as before I could pick out an isolated enemy, get into range, and then win a gunfight by getting more hits faster, now I'm taking a pounding getting into range. Or, I have similar speed to Maryland, but I've got a way bigger hitbox and  although I get the first shot off at a longer range, the maryland can really knock ships off fast with the extra 3 guns.

I have a few ideas to try, tell me what you think

1) Put on the L model. They are a lot heavier and my speed will drop down to something like 35. I just hang back and wait for the enemy to come to me. I much prefer to AA the scouts, move into the shadows and attack, but I guess I could do this.
2) Put on only the front two L turrets. My speed jumps into the 40s. I can get into range, shoot and get out. But I don't have a lot of broadside weight.
3) Put on the D model, hope my spead improves to low 40s and play like a sodak
4) Put on the sodak L guns and really get the speed up and play it exactly like a sodak.

Don't take the back turret off the Iowa.

In the entire game, there are only 2 or 3 BBs that play better with no back turret. Iowa is not one of them.

Sodak with a BB5 or BB6 crew will do 47 knots

Iowa with a BB5 or BB6 crew will do 44 knots.

If you learn to sling your shots in a Iowa, you can get the same range as a H44

USN - I run 6 Eng.

As others have said, your engies not the weight of the L turrets is your issue. I ran 4 Engies when I went up the USN tree. Needless to say I am currently leveling up 2 additional Engies now to give me 6 for better Monty speed (40 vs 39) and OH time.

6 engies don't make you go faster, they make the over heat last a lot longer

The only way to reach 44 knots on the Iowa is to remove Sailors and/or binds of ammo.

It is impossible to go over the speed cap without removing ~10k displacement.

There is a reason why is called a "Speed Cap" Iowa's is 25/42.

The stack penalty starts being noticeable @ 5-6 engineers, you really only gain OH time. As long as they speed cap, you want those high number of engineers. Long OH time could change how the line works. Its hard to run from someone who has 2 more minutes of OH than you ;)

The fake range you gain by slinging, is an Optical illusion, same as when you run you get more range. The distance from where the shells originate and where they land is always ~ the same distance. You just get closer or farther from the point the shells will land. Making you "Think" you gained/lost range when in reality your firing the same distance. You appear to gain H44 range, but in reality, you moved away from it, and it moved toward you. When you sling, you move slightly in and out of range. Your still firing the same distance. Your just moving quickly in and out of range.

If your only getting 39 in your Montana, you
A. Have some fat sailors that need more vets.
B. Have really crappy engineers stats.
C. Have too much bulge/other armor......

The north/south range advantage is also caused by the point the guns firing being farther north of the center of the visible sprite. That is because the ship sprites show the side of the ship on the south side. The actual guns are placed center of the deck. Funnily, the hit box disregards all this and is centered on the visible sprite.

+1 solid advice

Were talking a quarter turn when you sling not running back. Quarter turn will sling your shot 3/4 to 1 inch more. Running is not slinging. Once you learn this normpearii you will see it's not optical.

On the running, if you get a new BB player to chase you while your running, you'll take him out.

slingshot does not give you more range, period. It does not change the range difference between ships.
you still get outranged by h39 if the h39 does the same thing. like norm said. you are just moving quickly in and out of range.

again, Iowa's max speed is 42.

in order to reach that, you have to
-have decent engineers
-be using the right engine (with about 233k horsepower)
-not go crazy on armoring the ship
