  • Destroyer Escort Pictures? **Look** (USS Slater DE 766)

Some of you may remember this thread...while others might not. Anyway I have created this thread to  share my picutres from my time volunteering at the USS Slater DE (Destroyer Escort) 766 in Albany, NY. The Slater is the only DE afloat in the Untied States out of 563 that where made durring the war.

The Stern 3" gun Being fired on Memorial Day 2012


DE Day - What DE day is along with the Firing of our stern 3" gun (Firing at 4:55 in)

On Septemer 17th 2011 they started up the #3 diesel 8 cylinder Ships service generaotr in B3; The Aft Engine room (For them starting it up a second time that day put it @ 2:07  -

Coast Guard Day Including a Breif Hitory of the Coast Guard & its role Durring WWII & Also included is the Firing of our stern 3" 50 Cal Gun for a three round Salute.

Another Slater Coast Guard Veteran -


Another of our our WWII Veteran Volunteer's! From a article he was in a few years ago - "Based near the island of Corsica, Madden’s PT boat took part in operations against German naval positions off the coasts of northern Italy and southern France and was credited with sinking six ships. Madden later served on destroyer escorts later in the war and during the Korean War, yet didn’t see any combat then.

the fellow on the Left if im correct served on a DE durring WWII!

Another of our WWII Vet's He is *89* and Still giving tours! & Was a first class gunner's mate on USS OSMUS DE701 in the Pacific during World War II.

We even had our Coast Guard Flag flying on the Mast too!

Was onbaord on the 13th, & it was a Monday so that entailed a whaleboat ride!







Monday's are also when our oldest Active volunteer is there normaly..He is *90* & still dose welding ext.! And his helper in the red is another WWII vet at 85

Was onboard yesterday...(Was only there hlaf a day) So basicaly followed around the USS Earl K. Olsen DE 765 reunion group!

There ship had a *VERY* similar history as compaired to the Slater's durring WWII!







He's 85! ^






Assume the fellow in the Blue is a WWII Crewmember due to the WWII Pin in his hat! ;)

Yes..Yess.....Procrastination has got the better of me again with keeping this updated haha

But as of now there is less than a monthl eft in the tour season & till we had back a mile down south for the winter again.

Lets see here..We last left off with the Earl K. Olsen reunion group pictures.  So the next time was September 22nd & we happend to be having the USS Haynswort DD 700 reunion group onboard then!






& Then worked on removing some rust from where the empty casing's from one of the 40 MM's would go thorugh

Next time I was onboard was on October 6th for the Volunteer night!

I first worked on putting the final shine into the Bell so the clear coat could be put on it!



& With the Clear Coat -

& Now onto the Volunteer Diner time!
Two of our WWII Vets - The one on the Left served on PT Boats in the Med. then two DD's & a DE too & still gives tours at 88! And the one on the right still dose chipping, helps the welders ext. at 85!
