  • IJN Sub Guide

GHHalley

Over the next week, I will try to bring the old guide back to life on the new website.  As before, the majority of the information will be on the first reply to limit the length of the initial post on top of every page.

Table of contents:

Page 1 discusses the different subs and basic tactics.

Page 2 of this guide contains several discussions on crew setup and more on tactics.

Page 3 has a section about the historical context of the subs and more about the SS5.

Hope you all enjoy. Please reply to add in your own take on tactics.

Skim through all of the posts.  There are some good comments at the end.  I will try to update and organize the info better.

For anyone interested in more discussions about delay capping sailors, look at the German forum.  There is a long post about it stickied.  The general discussion is good, though some of the specifics are different for IJN.

I now have the KM SS5 and the IJN SS5.  The SS4 (HEI) is still the funniest sub to play.  I have to dumb down my crew to fit them in the sub, but it is sooo much fun.  Its hard, you have to play very smart, but the rewards when you take down 1 or 2 BB5/6's in a game and keep on going can't be compared.  It is an incredible sub.

I've seen a lot of SS4s recently take me on in the middle of the board and then turn to go get the BB line.  In both cases I think the subs lost my SS5 on sonar and just assumed I was going to attack the enemy BBs.  In both cases I chased them down.  The opposing players got no attack points, because my sonar was painting them and the BBs just stayed out of range.

If I know another sub is there (especially in a sub without back torpedo tubes) I assume they are attacking me and keep going towards them.  A good SS5's sonar range is a lot farther than you will believe and you are better off challenging them, then wasting your time getting nothing else.  Of course, you will get to know some sub players and realize they will ignore you.  In those cases, ignore my advice.

IJN subs do have the longest underwater times.  There is another post with underwater time comparisons.  In general, IJN had about 5% longer time underwater compared to KM and US.

I was just thinking about the history of the Kai-Kou. Looking at the coning tower you can see the letters I-13. I googled it and found out that the I-13 was an AM Type Sub, so most likely the Kai-Kou is based on the AM class submarine which was capable of carrying airplanes, rather than the I-400 class. Wikipedia link for reference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_AM_submarine

Lt SteelFist,

I agree with you.  I always questioned if the SS5 was a I400 and you are now proven right with the SS6.  I will try to get more info later and update the post.

   Thx.

I-400 found off the Hawaii coast!

Interesting news story came out recently.  After WW2, the US brought at least 5 IJN subs back to Pearl Harbor to examine.  1 of them was the last remaining I-400.  In 1946, Russia asked to examine the five subs as part of the war agreement.  The US Navy decided to scuttle the subs off of Hawaii to prevent the Russians from viewing them.  The waters are deep off of Hawaii (1000'+) and it has taken 15 years for the five subs to be found.  Interestingly, the largest one of all was one of the last to be found!

Really? but i don't think it is a outstanding point.... KM or US SS with a relative higher speed compare with IJN SS, so they can compensate what you stated 5% longer time and earlier attack the enemy

Yes, ijn sub have longest dive time of all nation till ss5.5

about ijn ss5 dive time is about 225secs and ss5.5 is 228 secs (228secs maybe the cap of dive time that SDE set for all nation)

I also tested us ss5.5 and km ss5.5, dive time is about 225secs and 220secs. Ijn dont have dive time benefit anymore.
