Quite.

I also disagreed with his view on where Canada should be going, but I had a deep respect for the man that held true to his convictions, no matter what. We can only admire who the man was, and wish our deepest sympathy to the friends and family who lost a father, a husband, and a friend.

May he rest in peace, and his determination never forgotten.

Prime Minister Harper offered a State funeral for Jack Layton to his wife yesterday. Whole story is here http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/08/22/pol-layton-funeral-plans.html

I don't know the protocol for them really, the last state funerals I remember are Pierre Trudeau and Ernest Smith, VC.

From Pathfinder's link:

"Soudas explained that state funerals are only automatic in cases of current and former governors general, current and former prime ministers, and sitting members of cabinet."

So protocol does not dictate a state funeral for the Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition per se, though he was a Privy Council member. However I think a state funeral is only fitting for the Honourable Jack Layton.

There's also talk of conferring the title "Right Honourable" posthumously, a title which is usually reserved for the three highest offices of prime minister, governor general, and chief justice: http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/Eminent+Canadians+support+dubbing+Layton+Right+Honourable/5302511/story.html

I'm a bit pissed at the fact some leftist spoke as if love, hope and compassion were exclusively social-democracy values.

Heck, I believe even Jack Layton would have been pissed at that. His father was a minister under Mulroney's Conservatives.

I believe its a low way to take the last statement of the man and twist them to fit in a politic agenda.

As if any non-left wing people were heartless bastards that didnt care about people.

aing i agree with you 100% on that i am a young conservative and was disgusted by parts of it, but was also moved by others and would have hoped it to have been as un-politicaly motivated as possible, but was unhappy when parts were twisted and his last message to Canadians was used in a way i don't believe it was intended to be used.
