I'm starting up leveling up to a SS on the IJN tree and was wondering what should I use
the R spot and the extra support slot for.
Engineer repairer restorer?

I'm kinda a noob(even though ive been intermitanly playing the game since it was free) so
any advice would be very welcome

This thread's over a year old.

Back on topic, yes an engy would be useful, but you probably found out your best set
up already.

I recomend 1 rep and 1 engy if you go down the line of the SS for your bigger subs :D hope
this helps you in the futre and good sailing

Repairer on the R slot. Restorers are just a short term band aid fix for the lack of SD in
earlier levels.

I have the Kadai and I run with: BO, 2 Torper, 2 Engy, sonar, planesman.

I am almost maxed on DP so I will have to loose a engy soon. I used the Sima, Kuma Kai,
and Kita to lvl my torpers and Engys. This worked well because they get a lot of Exp.
being on the torp ships. I started whole crew at the same time and my torpers are lvl 74,
where is my SS BO is lvl 70. Rest of the crew is around lvl 70 also. I go 31 knots OH,
but like I said I am maxed on DP.

for my SS, currently kaidai. I have 2 torpers, BO, Engy, and Planesman. I dont use sonar because your supposed to hunt
BB and SS are no fun to fight with. With that weight i save i go an extra knot. my ss3 can go 33 with one engy. speed is
the most important thing in a sub.

id suggest

2 bo's (13/14ok, not important. theyll level too fast, so make one for ss and other for asw.
split their time so dont out level your crew to 38)
2 torps (11/12 torp will cap about the same level, not sure reload really matters but some say
it does. will use the 2nd torper in ss2, but again need to be 38 for ss1 same time as bo)
1 sonarman (14ok)
1 planesman (15, its your air, you want as much air as you can get)
2 engineers (will use on bigger subs but need to level)
2 arm sailors (not for the sub but the ships and asw, read DP sailors guide in stickys)
1 scout (optional, can use original or roll one to sell later. for asw if ship allows and future subs
may carry)

not much difference between ASW and SS and need torpers to be same level as bo for subs so
may as well prepare to do both.
dont recruit your bo's, and if you do drop them below 100 crew or even below 20.
dont use gun on ss1 but place 2nd torper there so they level the same.
