Sweet Maro buddy. You, DFX and I should do a F-body cruise!
-"John Delorean was the best thing that ever happened to Pontiac imo. Don't get me wrong, I do like the newer Pontiac's but the company just didn't have the edge they used to. Probably the newest Pontiac I ever wanted to buy would be a late 90's trans- am or firebird with the LS-1 and Tremec 6 speed. However, even those cars were plagued with problems.
The Ls-1 is definitely in my top 3 favorite engines. Reliable, light, and easy to fix with power to boot."-
The earlier 4th Gen Firebirds did have several issues. But they got worked out in the later years. The 98-02 models were pretty damn reliable. In fact when I bought my Camaro SS I was actually looking for a WS6 T/A. I just got a good deal on my Camaro and thats what I ended up with and have been happy with it. But there is just something about the WS6 package Trans Am that just screams NASTY all over it. The Ram Air scoops on it makes it just look like a built to be bad predator (which it is).
The LS1 is a VERY good engine. Actually all of GM's LS series engines are just fantastic. Even though they are of the older push-rod architecture (compared with the increasing number and popularity of Overhead Cam designs), they are some of the most powerful line of engines on the market when it comes to HP output per displacement value and the potential to exponentially increase HP with such slight modifications are outstanding. The LS1's, especially those in the 00-02 models that came with the LS6 intake and heads for much better air flow were just nasty all the way around and was a drastic improvement over the previous iron block LT1s (93-97). While I can not deny the fact that Ford does build their cars with much better quality overall, their engines ever since the old 302's and 351 Windsors of the 80's was replaced, just flat out suck and are vastly underpowered when compared to GM's LS series.
My Camaro SS came stock with the LS6, as did most SLP edition Camaro SS's and WS6 T/A's in 2002. Thus factory mine came out of the box with 405HP and with my current mods I'm at 631 RWHP and 585 ftlbs Torque when I put it on the Dyno after having it re-tuned when I installed supercharger. I finally got rid of the stock rims which I had Michelin PS-2 run-flats on and bought some Torque Thrust II rims and slapped some Mickey Thompson ET street radials which offer MUCH better grip. I need to take her back to the track as Im sure I could get high 9sec times on the 1/4 mile. The Michelins just wouldnt grip on takeoffs.
