I came to the conclusion that Ewood posted on my own using my Yorktown with T2s. The only thing that I did slightly differently was that I'm using a 50/50 mix of fighters and bombers for 2 reasons. First, I need to level them all and I don't want to hurt my future operations. Second, because as noted above, I need to learn how to control them!
Some wonderful points have been made here by veteran players. However, being in the middle of a grind from L55 to L70, I do have some recent experience of a new CV driver.
1) Leveling up to a CV3 then suddenly jumping into a L75 CV for the first time is a terrible idea. You will end up on the wrong side of auto-balance and will be matched against CVs that have 20 levels of experence handling their planes. When you fail (happens to all) you'll get treated terribly and could get a bad reputation. I got yelled at a lot in the beginning "noob" but all I did was point at my ship and T1s and call them a noob back for expecting the unrealistic. That shut down quite a few people.
2) You miss out on the Blitz experience. Over there if you get a chance to learn and make mistakes that you can't in GB due to lesser competition. Also, because of all the hobbit map you get CL and DD appearing out of nowhere. It forces you to learn how to manuver your ship and planes at the same time.
3) I've seen some comments about locals and leveling straight to the T3s. I also saw some comments about them being useless. Have been tutored by some of the best they were 100% right by saying that you can't start that way, you need to learn how to use the planes. The only thing locals are good for is keeping spotted on your deck in case of attack or constantly hovering as a CAP over your own head. I tried to make them work and I found that some T3s were eating the locals right over me! I also found that your GB2 teammates will go insane at you for having your own CAP and not helping them. Guess what? Locals have such a short range you can't really get at scouts or provide a CAP for BB6s, unless you have a pile of fighter pilots. All that does is prevent you from leveling your bombers. Trust me, I tried them every way I could and locals just don't cut it for a new person leveling. They just teach you tactics that aren't practical for your future.
4) I saw a suggestion to get elites and others saying don't. For V2 and other skilled drivers, they could get away with that. They know what they are doing. I got the elite fighters. My expereince is that they are performing about 15-20 levels higher than a bunch of other screwed up fighters. V2 certainly knows EXACTLY how to train them so he didn't need to buy elites. For new people, the elites game me a little extra edge, so when I make a small mistake, they cover it... a little! For me, the $6 has paid off nicely. The other thing I did was I paid a few credits to buy a L80s fighter and stick him on my crew. This made leveling up a bit easier as it was one less to deal with. Also, it put a "clutch" guy on my team. When I know that I really need my A team, I got him. Sometimes, it helps a little.
5) I employed my T1/2s EXACTLY like Ewood said and they have done some good. I've found that I'm providing some vision (just some, not great, but enough so I'm not yelled at) and I've found that even when I'm not beating enemy T3s, I'm getting my bombers through enemy fighter cover and AA to get hits in. My elite L62s and my L85 in T2s actually can hold off L75-L80 fighters in T3s. When fighting over my head, the AAW and AA weakens them and my fighters finish. Over the enemy side I lose sometimes, but I don't care as I'm carrying 30 of them and my bombers are getting through.
6) Final thing is the crap about just reading the tactics section. Bull. If you don't do it and practice it, you will fail. It took me a quite a bit of trial and error to get down the timing for launching, what to launch, when and where to launch, not to mention how to use them and attacking! Go to the practice mission and beat down the BBs there.
