12" spread gets better around lvl 65. It did for me, gunner had 11 acc, boosted, about 80 vets and not fully experted. So you dont need 200 vets gunner to manage the Alaska.
As far as at level BB1 goes, yes its pretty much the worse. 4 support slot, 12" L give you 2 bind of ammo, I think, only really good thing is the AA battery and the speed.
Kongo has a better spread, unless your gunner are really uber. Also have a better reload. (however i've never found a ship as BORING as the kongo. The thing as no personality at all in my opinion)
Revenge is a monster. Better range, but also will easily score 15-20k hit on you. Which unless again your crew is uber, will kill you since you normally lack SD at that level.
Sharnhorst has about the range of a BB2. It hits a bit less. but it will have no trouble slowly gunning you down safely out of your range. As far as at level BB1 went, Sharn was my favorite, for you never know the lack of range the other have presented.
Once you get the guam tough, with the one more support crew, slightly tougher ship, and gunner that can handle the 12" better, you might be able to pose a bigger threat to people as your 12" are hard hitting enough, your profile is small if you use it well, and the ship is easy to dodge with.
In the end its always a question of ability and playing by the ship strenght. USN BB1 are pretty balanced. Decent speed, somewhat bad range but good firepower. Once the spread gets better, you will have lot more fun in the Guam.
btw for someone that was talking about his single rep and engy: bad news: you are missing at leas 4 engy and 2 rep if you have AA, and 5 engy and 3 rep if you dont.
And NO TORPEDOES ON BBS. When a BB1 is shooting torps, its well in range of other BB1s. So I keep my range. And blow the BB. And the torp blow before hitting me. your torp range failed.
