  • Range Report: USN AA Guns (Repost)

    04. 18. 2007 16:54

LordKelvin
I had a bit of spare time last night, so I decided to start a compilation of the ranges of
the USN AA guns.

A few notes:

1. Some of the pics are mirrored, since I was testing with broadsides on both port and
starboard. So for the pics where you see my tag and name on the wrong side, that's because
it was flipped.

2. All shots were made at the golden angles listed at Trainworld, and the pics show where
the shell terminates in air. This should NOT be confused with the actual range of the AA,
since the engagement envelope is behind where the shell terminates. Higher angles also
mean that the engagement envelope is smaller.

All pics in the next post to optimize thread loading.

*Destickied by TimmyC - LK's request.

hmm i posted in the gun range data topic but no reply. so just trying here since its the
same thing.. does anyone know what does the name of each gun mean? like is there a
relevance between eg. the Mark 10 20 or the /50 /38s?

so what is the easy-to-use, long range, fast reload AA(reload gunners) guns of all time
for USN? The AA(reload gunners) guns that most of you USN users use? So that i might
learn from the USN "pros"..

thanks..

They both work between their golden angles. I can never remember the right one
for them so I just set it around 37 degrees.

The main reason that I don't have the ranges for the A guns is because I don't actually
have AA gunners. I did have two pairs several months before I conducted these tests, but
as I didn't have any actual use for AA gunners at the time, I donated them to the local
fleet resource library (where they might still be right now).

And in any case, what Penguin said was right. AA gunners get majorly gimped in the Reload
area, which hurts them considerably later. With regular classings, even an Elite boosted
Reload gunner (starting out with +13 to Reload and extra 20% to ability throughout) will
end up with around 1250 displayed ability in Reload at level 120. By that time its True
Ability (assuming fully vetting and experting it at the very end) may or may not
compensate and allow it to hit the Reload cap, but why wait until then to be able to
perform like Reload gunners? Even if you are willing to tolerate that, the performance of
the A guns themselves is, IMO, somewhat lacking, since the engagement envelopes are
shorter due to higher golden angle, and there's only a slight improvement in reload speed
over the D versions.

I may or may not get the urge to test the A guns at a later point, but likely not, as I
don't have AA gunners, nor do I have the sudden urge to get them.

"Am I the only one who uses AA Gunners"

Yes... because everyone else use rld gunners. If you look at the growth of the AA gunners,
they get shafted in acc and rld. The only thing they gain is AAW ability, which isn't that
helpful.

Am I the only one who uses AA Gunners, because I don't see the A models on these
charts...

Mad props to you Kelvin. Good stuff.

Looks like my advocacy for the 5" mk29L is misguided. Very Long reload and not much more
range. From the range test, looks like the 5" mk38 N is the best AA gun. Excellent damage
and reload, and is just a hair shorter-ranged than the 3/70 N.

Again Kelvin, good stuff. Thanks.

The problem with that is that the 3"70 N's and D's have different golden angles, so if you
have them put to the same grouping then only one set will be firing on-target while the
other isn't.

You could alternate between guns that have the same golden angle, like the 3"70 N's and
5"38 Mk 29 N's, 5"54 L's and 6" DP N's, and so on, but that still gives you different
ranges and reloads, which still poses a problem. Unless you do a two-group setting like 6"
DP and 5"38's on a Cleve's R and T mounts, respectively, things can get somewhat hectic.

one set of USN AA guns wont help AAing. USN 370s N mixs with USN 370s D are
better choices to kill bombers =.=\
