  • Range Report: USN AA Guns (Repost)

I had a bit of spare time last night, so I decided to start a compilation of the ranges of
the USN AA guns.

A few notes:

1. Some of the pics are mirrored, since I was testing with broadsides on both port and
starboard. So for the pics where you see my tag and name on the wrong side, that's because
it was flipped.

2. All shots were made at the golden angles listed at Trainworld, and the pics show where
the shell terminates in air. This should NOT be confused with the actual range of the AA,
since the engagement envelope is behind where the shell terminates. Higher angles also
mean that the engagement envelope is smaller.

All pics in the next post to optimize thread loading.

*Destickied by TimmyC - LK's request.

That's actually one of the most common setups for a Cleve AA whore that I've seen. The R
mounts can take good advantage of the 6" DP's, and the T mounts give you a second layer of
AA to engage planes with. 16 barrels of AA in any given broadside is definitely something
worth reckoning. The problem is in managing both groups of guns, since you have to point
them in the same directions, keep their angles separate, and switch between them as you
reload, which isn't helped much by the fact that the 5"38's have a faster reload time than
the 6" DP's. But regardless, played properly, it's more effective than an Atlanta due to
higher durability, faster speed, more barrels, scouting ability, and better firing arcs.

I'm just curious to see what you ppl would think about a Cleveland that flakwhored:

6"/47 DP L on the R slots and 5"/38 Mk. 38 on the T slots... Do you ppl think this would
be a good AAW ship?

Eh, I already have one sticky up there. Besides, this one has less utility, and people can
just search to find it.

It actually took me only an hour, since I used my Omaha. The good thing about the Omaha is
that since its wing turrets don't fire both ways, you can separate your guns in about 8
different ways by switching between forward/rear guns, A/B locker, and port/starboard
broadside, and further separate them with gradual fire. Testing 32 guns, with 5 guns per
test run, I only had to play a test mission 8 times (the 6" DP's and 5"54's would only fit
in the Omaha's big mounts, and I had some overlap since I wasn't able to get good
screenies on some guns that I had to redo).

Also, I replaced the AA chart. Includes the golden angle, reload time, and damage per
shell for each gun, besides the range.
