  • 2nd Class Sailor glitch?

Knowing that I'll be expanding my "fleet" into several crews and wanting some flexibility,
I decided to level up some different classes. Yesterday, while bringing a plain ole sailor
up to L20 to become a 2nd Class Sailor, I was unhappily surprised to find that when I
classed him (from regular sailor to 2nd class) all his stats fell to around where he was a
L1. Is this a glitch? Is there a purpose behind having these 2nd, 1st, and petty officer
sailors?

Arms sailors and Support sailors can both use the same weapons.

Yes, that is correct. Arms sailors can't work the torpedos!

Not arms sailors, leave them as SUPPORT only.

Well, its working. they are currently at L35. They aren't the greatest gunners out there.
Accuracy surprising wasnt too bad (as AA but not for anti ship) however the reload was
bad. BUT for torpedos they work pretty good. In the beginning of the game it takes an
extra minute to get the tubes loaded, but since I only carry one salvo, its pointless to
have a torpedoman hanging around and not contributing. Also, I should note that they are
Elite, Premium and maxed out on vets, so their values aren't that bad. When I get home,
I'll have to check out their stats and post them for you.

I've talked with other people and considered doing it myself to try, instead of classing
your AA/ASW gunners up the gunner line, simply leave them at arms sailors to squeeze a
little rep/res ability out of them but still get some Acc/Rld increased stats. I imagine
they might cap still and provide a little more rep. Never tried it though.

A little secret is that sailors classed as support only can operate all the good 3"/5"
normal guns used for USN AA. This gives you high repair sailors that can double as
gunners/asw sailors. Its something I've never tried for myself though.

@ Mako - I have quite a few crewman, so making one screwed up one as a torpedo/repair
specialist isn't a big deal.

That's a good tactic actually but if they can be classed to engineer/repairman,
then you are seriously screwing up that sailor.

@ Mega - I only used 1/2 of the T mounts. Just enough torps in close in panic situation to
sink any CA or CL. Filling them all would have cost me another knot. Also, instead of a
gunner, I used a support sailor, so I can launch them, but I'm still getting the repair
and restore at a better rate.


For ammo, I've been splitting my load with the Brooklyn 1/2 Light for the improved range
and the 1/2 Heavy if they move in close. I've been switching back and forth depending on
the tactical situation. With the Oakland, I'm carrying all light, as the 5" have short
enough range already.
